Created as a filler game to keep people busy until Arkham Knight. Shorter dev time and lower budget. Seems like an expansion pack to Arkham City. Cool seeing Arkham City... before it became AC. Un-destroyed, with Christmas decorations. Graphics are a mix of fantastic (weather effects) and below average (some character models).
Story wise it provides a good origin for Joker's and Batman's relationship. According to people more knowledgeable about Batman lore, Origins has the best Joker and Bane outside of comics. Batman's voice actor, not Kevin Conroy but Chris Redfield, does a pretty decent job... Ok, I jest, but I played so much Resident Evil that I can't un-hear Roger Craig Smith's Redfield, even though he's trying really hard not to sound like him. Cold Cold Heart DLC is really good, especially compared to Harley Quinn's Revenge from Arkham City.
Boss fights are best in the series so far with each one being different. Great crime reconstruction scenes.
However...
Progression system is terrible: it requires you to go through it in a linear manner, and some of the ranks in the Dark Night System can be achieved in a handful of story beats. Miss them, and you can only attempt them again in NG+.
It's buggy: physics are spazzing out regularly, e.g. enemy bodies after takedowns and during combat, or Batman's cape. Riddler trophy puzzles not resetting properly, Dark Knight System challenges not completing, or completing too early. Crime-in-Progress encounters may fail to properly spawn. During stealth sections you can see some enemies literally teleport around the map, or become permanently stuck on level geometry; easy to notice with Detective Mode on.
Go back inside the boat, or GCPD, to get collectibles, go outside, all gun wielding enemies, whom you've cleared out, have respawned, and are aiming at you.
The new section of the city is a drab, grey featureless box with snipers on every single rooftop by the end of the story making traversing the city a chore. Guys with guns on nearly every roof, next to Riddler puzzles. Guys with guns in most combat sequences with disarm and destroy becoming available very late into the game.
Combat is almost broken. The rhythm is off, the timing has been changed for no reason, Special Combo Takedown target prioritization is based on proximity instead of threat level, Special Combo Takedowns and counters may not work (i.e., Batman just stands there like a deer caught in headlights), even basic attacks can just fail to target an enemy. Sometimes combo multipliers drop mid-takedown animation, other times gadgets don't hit anything. Some enemies will begin attacking you, then cancel at the last moment, making you lose the combo if you instinctively attempted to counter: this "feint" is not a mechanic, as it punishes players who are good enough not to rely on counter indicators.
I love combat in Arkham City. It's so tight, obviously tested over hundreds of hours to tweak it to perfection... and then there's this. It's fine if you just want to finish the story, but for challenges, achievements, or attempting to get the highest possible score, it's downright awful.
I have a hard time recommending Arkham Origins. I haven't played Knight yet, but I doubt it's worse than this. It's a decent game, but the worst Arkham easily.
