Crysis 3 is the one I haven’t played until now.
You play as Prophet, the guy that stole your body in the last game. After being put in a pod for 24 years, you’re saved by Psycho, that guy from the first game that was British and people liked. After giving you a gun, you follow Psycho and his resistance team so he can get you to fight CELL, who are still around and stronger than ever now that they provide unlimited energy via Ceph goo.
And so you return to battle, using your Nano suit to fight humans and aliens alike, wondering why you’re only getting 40 fps in a game released in 2013 until you realized it turned RTX on by default and set it to high.
Crysis 3 is a little, --little-- bit of a departure from the series, moving so far away timeline wise from Crysis 1 and Crysis 2 to basically set up a new story. I mean, its a continuation of the first two, but now everything is all bad and dystopian and New York looks like a really pretty jungle with a dome around it.
There’s a novel that came out alongside Crysis 3 called CRYSIS: Escalation that’s supposed to fill in a bunch of holes. But, like, I’m not going to read it?
That being said, I do think I like this one the best. Crysis has always been this out of the way FPS series that EA published back in the day, and is now just published by Crytek proper with the Remasters. Its like those Medal of Honor games that came out in 2010 if they were actually good.
The Nano Suit has been revamped a third time. Sprinting no longer costs energy, but you CAN get tired after a really long time of just sprinting. You can pick up upgrades for your nano suit and then spend those upgrades to get new powers, thing like longer stealth, heavier punch, being able to take a bajllion bullets before you die, scaring the shit out of everyone, things like that. If you use them a certain way then you get an extra bonus to said power boost. Its neat, I like it more than Crysis 2’s system where you stuck a straw in a Ceph corpse and stole their delicious Ceph juice for upgrades.
All of the Crysis usuals are still here. Modifying weapons on the fly to kill idiots better, jumping good, running good, running into people so hard that they splatter on the wall in a rag doll and just die instantly.
There’s even more of an emphasis on pretending to be the Predator from Predator, especially now that you have a bow that doesn’t train your energy when you use it in stealth. Enemies aren’t as smart as they use to be, but they still happen to close in on wherever they think you are. They spend a lot of time in cover and spread out just enough that you can pick them off when you have the drop on them.
You can play the game as this mix of Doom 2016 and Batman Arkham Asylum. Lunging out and doing terrible things to terrible people before vanishing back into the brushes with your cloak.
I like the mix up of a literal stealth archer and full blown heavily armed maniac. You CAN just play the game one way or another, stay in cover and let your energy recharge so you can go back to picking people off with your bow or just go in guns blazing.
But why would you do that? Do you hate fun? Are you stupid?
There isn’t really much else I can say about Crysis 3 that I haven’t said about the last two games. I like the changes to the suit, the bow is fun, scaring the shit out of CELL troopers is fun, turning the Ceph into a nice milkshake is still fun. Its a good series, but I can understand why it didn’t pick up like some other late 00s to early 10s FPS games.
Its science fiction but doesn’t go deep enough (at least without the novels, I guess) to satisfy codex readers and lore junkies. The shooting is fun but it doesn’t do anything different that other shooters haven’t done better. The stealth is fun but it never gets to the levels of other stealth games that came out around the same time.
But I still had fun with the Crysis series. The original release had a multiplayer mode, but it looks like it shut down around a year ago. That’s sad, I liked the Predator mode.
It has some problems, there’s a few plot holes and the characters just sort of exist most of the time. But Prophet and Psycho kind of carry the show, which is nice because you spend 90% of the game with Psycho and 100% of the game with Prophet, so it works out.
The game sort of peters out after the third last level, but that’s just how games used to go back in the day. They just sort of started sucking at the 80% mark.
Crysis 3 gets 8.5 Prophets and Psychos kissing out of 10.
We still don’t know what happened to Nomad.
