Think of this as a rogue-like puzzler dressed as an rpg/strategy game.
You pick a race/class, bring some items, and start at level 1 on a map made within parameters. Some maps are better suited to certain classes or strategies, but each map is an individual experience. You fight through, level up (maybe all the way to 10) and you win or you die. If you win, you get some cash to unlock stuff in your town before trying new maps with new strategies or old maps with new classes.
Big thing to be aware of: There are two versions. There is an OG and this new 3D version. The OG has much higher reviews (88% overall) than this, newer version (76% overall) at the time I'm writing this. Which is better?
The OG is the one I bought and that has my heart (250+ hours), but this one has it's place. I got it for free since I own the original (a kind move by the company!) and I've enjoyed going back and winning some achievements again.
The perks of this version -
Rewind - There is a rewind if you die. In the original, I have accidentally double clicked to my death. It sucked, but there was a sense of danger and achievement when things went right. This is a tough game. If someone wanted a more casual experience, the rewind feature exists in this one. There's no such thing in the first. Personally, I've used it once or twice, but I usually just get mad and restart. I feel like I lost if I have to use it so I don't.
3D graphics - The original was all 2D and fit in a small window. This version has graphics where you can zoom in or out. Some people will vastly prefer this. For me, it was meh. I didn't play the OG for the graphics and I prefer the old look. It's not a massive turn off, but I immediately zoom out when I start a map and then never play with the zoom feature again. I'd prefer if it was zoomed out to see the whole map from the start. There are some QoL improvements to make things easier to see and discern, but the graphics update didn't do anything for me.
Balancing - The games are mostly the same, but there were a few tweaks here and there. It used to be you could hold down on the mouse and select from a wheel, but this one doesn't have that. The inventory is reworked so that things are given a weight value instead of organizing them around slots. Some things are better, some things aren't, but nothing really offends me or compels me to stand and sing. The intro was done a little differently to make it more friendly, if I remember correctly.
**************** Bottom Line ***************************
Should I buy this or the original? If you like challenging puzzles with more than one road to success, I think both are viable.
The Rewind version will look newer and be a little more forgiving. The old one is more compact and looks retro, but I bet it could run on a supercharged potato. I like the retro look myself. I've played the OG more myself, but I've had fun revisiting the game on this one. I think a lot of people were mad it was the same thing and yet not so they downvoted this when it came out. The company gave it out to people who owned the original for free (like me!) and I've gotten 45 hours of fun out of revisiting it, so hooray! Thanks!
