I can no longer recommend this game to anyone.
With almost 5,000 hours in this game this is not try once/hate it review.
Before starting I will say I am Colonial Loyalist. I have spent roughly 1 minute of my time playing Warden when i pressed the wrong option at the beginning of one of the wars and I am incredibly grateful that you are not faction locked until you have been playing for 6 minutes so I could change back to the correct faction.
I am so bitterly disappointed with these developers. They had created, in my opinion, the greatest game of all time. I could understand people not liking the game if the top down view put them off but besides this the Foxhole game offered everything. That is why it is bewildering to me why the devs would start to bring in changes that effectively give 1 of the 2 factions a massive advantage over the other side.
Faction specific equipment has utterly killed this game.
When I first started playing this game it is my belief that each sides equipment was identical except for look of them. No side was given an advantage and I missed those day massively.
Then Faction specific equipment was bought in.
The first of which was the Silverhand tank given to the wardens.
When this was first introduced this was a war winning tank. Once the Wardens teched it the war was over and they won 7 wars in a row before it was nerfed. On one hand i understand why the devs wanted 7 wars as at the time the Colonials were ahead by 7 in total wins so they want to even it out. However the Colonials lost approximately 40 players over this time (including almost myself) as the game was effectively dead. Some people will say 40 player left who cares as there are roughly 1,000 - 2,000 players playing the game. When the Silverhand was introduced the number of players was roughly 400. So 10% of their player based stopped playing. To put this another way if we say the player numbers where the same between the 2 factions, as in 200 players for each faction, then that equates to a 20% loss for one faction. How could anyone think that is a good thing?
Unfortunately the devs took no notice of this and forged ahead with more faction specific equipment.
Examples.
Best light machine gun in the game the Fiddler is specific for Warden. This used to be available to both factions but once they split equipment the Colonials lost access to it.
Best anti tank grenade in the game Flask is specific for Warden (refer below for an example).
Best all in one anti tank/vehicle/structure weapon is the Cutler again specific for Warden.
Best off road logistic truck is specific for Warden. I will say since Heavy trucks were introduced both sides have access to this but the Warden (non heavy) truck was introduced roughly 2 years ago.
Best partisan vehicle the Duck car which can go on land and sea and that's right is specific for Warden.
Almost all Warden tanks out range Colonial tanks by 10% - 30%. The only easily built Colonial tank that has the same range not more but the same is one of our Tank destroyers. Which brings me back to the flask above. This tank destroyer is open topped which mean grenades can be thrown inside it not just on the outer armour. We had a TD with 3 occupants and the very first flask that was thrown at us instantly killed all 3 players. Not injured and bleeding but instantly killed. So the only tank the Colonials have that has the same range as Warden tanks can be decrewed with 1 grenade. The Colonials have nothing remotely close that could to the same to a Warden tank.
I am not going to completely stop playing this game as i still enjoy it especially when i never see an enemy but a new player that chooses Colonials is going to hate it so you get the game we have now where Colonials will either give the game away or change factions so we are always outpopped. This is easy to see as Colonials rarely have queues anymore as almost always there are more Wardens trying to get into a hex than Colonials as we have less players in general now.
18/04/23 update.
I did play some more of this game and in it's current format it really is a dead game.
The final straw for me was defending a Relic base and the Wardens rolled up a push 250. For those who do not know what that means it is a very large mortar that is pushed by 2 infantry that does incredible damage to structures and yes this is Warden specific. With enough infantry and tank cover there is no counter to it. After the Relic went down (took about 90 seconds with roughly 20 infantry defending it) I though to myself howabout we go and get a 250 of our own to retaliate. Then it dawned on me we were still 2 tech levels away from getting our 1 and only version of it. So roughly a week.
I just do not get giving 1 of 2 factions these kind of advantages and thinking the game will survive.
Wardens get 40 mm vehicles very early in the war and Colonials get the mid to late. my estimate (and estimate only) is the Wardens get their first 40 mm vehicle 2 weeks before Colonials.
Wardens get first of two 250 mm vehicles (the first being the push gun) early mid game and Colonials get their one and only 250 ability on, I think, the second last tech level. Again I think about 2 weeks earlier.
One of the only advantages Colonials get is when we build a tank crate in the Mass Production Factory we get 5 of one our kind of tanks in a crate instead of the normal 3. This was put into the game (I believe) as the Warden tanks are so much better with the idea that the Colonials have to have more of their tanks to counter Warden. Say 8 colonial tanks to counter 5 warden tanks (my numbers only and an example only). So as Warden tanks out range Colonial tanks, some warden tanks have 360 infantry cover as their machine can rotate 360, it is required to have more Colonial tanks to compensate. If this was built into the game I could accept that as long as Colonials were able to do this. The only problem with this plan is once a hex is in heavy combat the devs designed a queue system to even out the numbers so 1 side does not roll the other. by having more people in the hex. So Colonials require more tanks to counter Wardens but this cannot happen as once queues start then the populations between the factions is even so we cannot get more tanks in.
Do not buy this game expecting balanced equipment. This will not happen for a long time. One of my Regiment mates said the devs said in a dev stream that they know Colonials require buffs. I do NOT want buffs just give both sides the same equipment. Not matter what they do when there is faction specific equipment one side is going to feel like they got the short end of the stick.
Unless something changes drastically long playing Colonial Loyalist will give the game away and you will be left with a PVP game where very few people want to play one of the factions.
Definitely going to have a longer break now. I am just sick of it. Once day I will return to it to see if anything has been done about it.
Another reason I am having a break is my Regiment has decided to play Warden next war. They have been Colonial for at least 50 wars but are getting sick not having good equipment. As above less people want to play Colonial which were this game is at now.
