There Will be Trouble
Welcome to Detroit City. You play as a well-known creature that is part man, part machine called Robocop that was made by Omni Consumer Products company. You work for the Detroit Police Department, and your prime directives are: to serve the public trust, protect the innocent and uphold the law. The city has a new threat known as New Guy. You will have to find out who it is and bring justice to him.
The game begins with Vultures (punk rock gangsters) attacking a Channel 9 building. Lieutenant Robbins to Robo, “Hey! You can't go in yet. We need to wait for reinforcements!”. “Reinforcements have arrived”, RoboCop answered. Your mission is to save hostages and clear all threats. There you will learn the basics of gameplay. The first thing that you will encounter is shooting. Robocop has a semi-automatic pistol Auto-9 as the main weapon and special vision that can highlight enemies just like in the movie. Shooting is well-made, and you will enjoy it during the whole playthrough thanks to the destructible environment, decent gore and good controls. You don’t have to worry about ammo, it’s unlimited for your pistol, but don’t think shootouts will be easy. Of course, it depends on the difficulty you play on, but some places can be rough if you don’t cover and just run straight to the enemies. Come quietly or there will be trouble.
After each mission, you will return to the precinct where you can speak with other cops, do some side quests and practice at a firing range. Both main and secondary quests are fun, and you will meet many iconic characters from Robocop movies. You will enjoy a lot of action and some detective work as well. The game features dialogues where you must choose an answer that will impact the story. Your choices will determine whether you will be more of a robot or a human.
All characters have nice voice acting, but their facial animations are poor. Sometimes, you can see bad lip sync or unnatural mimics. It looks strange because the rest of the game's visuals are awesome. Each level has nice lighting, textures, objects, etc. The environment has a nice atmosphere and looks pretty good, thanks to the new Unreal Engine 5, but it doesn't run well. I played on maxed-out graphics at 1080p with RTX 3060ti, i5 11400, 16GB RAM and NVME SSD. In one level, the game runs only 30 FPS, and I got some crashes on the desktop too. Later, I tried to lower textures from epic to high which helped a little bit, but still, there were many FPS drops during explosions and big shootouts with many visual effects. Also, I encountered a glitch with burned places that were blue instead of black. Devs stay out of trouble and take a look at the performance of the game.
Nevertheless, the gameplay is fun, and you can make it even better with experience points, gained for neutralizing suspects and completing quests, to unlock various skills. Also, you can upgrade Auto-9 by placing numerous chips found in levels on its PCB. The story is good, and you will encounter many references to old Robocop movies: various quotes, images and more. The game offers a new game plus where you can choose harder difficulty and unlock more PCBs for your gun.
I'd buy that for a dollar!
Not only for a dollar, this game is worth its full price. I can recommend RoboCop: Rogue City to you. It's a must-have for RoboCop movie fans and anyone who likes good shooting games. There are some problems with performance and a few bugs/glitches, but it's still a very good game with a nice story and environment, and you can find many easter eggs. I advise you to watch all three movies before playing the game because you will enjoy your playthrough more, and now, excuse me, I have to go. Somewhere, there is a crime happening.
