This reboot of the original Shadow Warrior shares some similarities with the original classic. But there is a lot of new things and changes to the new reboot. Luckily I think most of these changes I am happy with.
Lets start with the GOOD stuff
- The game now has a backstory which is messed up but is interesting in how they tell it to you.
- More story driven and there are a few characters you interact with.
-Most of your weapons have returned and they now have purchasable upgrades and feel for the most part
pretty good to use
- Melee combat with the sword is much better and you have sword abilities you can unlock as well.
-It is still gruesome as ever esp when using the sword
-You now have powers as well as passive skills you can unlock as well which add a lot to the gameplay and
makes it more creative and fun to mix between weapons, sword and powers.
- The game is a decent length. It surprised me how long it actually was for a reboot.
- You also have good replay-ability options in the game like EX Mode where you can redo the campaign
again with all the weapons and upgrades you purchased from your previous playthrough as well as
increasing the difficulty
-Graphics are definitely an improvement over the original
-Some people might not like this change but the main character you play Lo Wang, is much younger and
sounds and looks a bit different the original Lo Wang. He is still quite funny and appealing.
-A good mixture of returning and new enemy types and they all look good.
-Secrets, fortune cookies and anime babes return in the reboot
Now onto the bad stuff
-Performance: Don't get me wrong the game runs ok. I never had any crashes or freezes in game. However the game doesn't support Gsync. It has Vsync and if you don't turn it on your framefrate will go through the roof if you have a pretty powerful pc even though there is a option in game to set the framefrate to your monitors refresh rate.
-Performance: On top of that if you don't have Vsync on you will encounter screen shaking when strafing left and right which is annoying. Also to note there isn't a lot of screen resolution, aspect ratio combination options.
- There is weapon in the game that is a demon head that shoots a heat beam and it is buggy and barely
works which is really annoying and very disappointing since it is a strong weapon. I have no clue why it
doesn't work.
-Bosses are a bit of a disappointment as well. They do feel monotonous and boring after a while and
annoying as well after a while esp on Hard or above difficulty. Its a shame cause they are good as characters
in the game just not as entertaining to fight against.
-Dialogue is a bit weak as well between Lo Wang and certain characters. I mean its not bad but they could of
put a bit more thought in it in some parts.
-The ninja shuriken stars have been downgraded and are not in their own slot and are only
used when the sword is equipped. They are much weaker as a result which is a shame.
- This is more of a preference than anything but it would help if the anime babes were in 3D instead of
sprites
Ok so overall I recommend this game cause of the simple fact that the gameplay is definitely more fun and creative this time round due to having abilities and powers and upgrades. The backstory is pretty interesting as well even though it is messed up and the new characters are quite interesting. There is also some returning stuff like the weapons, secrets and enemy types for fans of the original as well.
