Team Fortress Classic! I've always been somewhat interested in it but I never managed to truly get into it. I started playing TF2 first and got super used to that one before trying this one out and when I did try this one out I quickly realized its... Similar but very different at the same time. It just felt like everything was either weaker or I was simply missing every shot I took because you can't really feel hitting anything in this game. It is a pretty old game made on the original Half Life engine if I'm not wrong so I guess it makes sense that you never feel like you're hitting your enemies but come on man when I'm shooting a rocket at your face and it looks like its going straight through you then something must be off. When I first played this years and years ago I just thought it was a me issue and moved on from the game pretty quickly. I'm back now years later cuz I got the game again in the Valve Complete Pack and I wanna review everything I own so I tried the game again. Before trying it I read some of the Team Fortress 2 comics and learned a bit more about the mercenaries in Team Fortress Classic, I really like em actually so I thought maybe I'd enjoy the game more.
+Considering how old it is the game doesn't look that bad if you ask me. It looks like the old, classic Counter Strike games or the original Half Life. Probably because they're all made on the same engine either way the point is the graphics have their nostalgic charm to me.
+A lot of classes to choose from. The classic soldier with his rocket launcher, the spy with his ability to make himself look like he's on the enemy team, the medic with his healing abilities and the heacy weapons guy who's super slow but can deal a TON of damage in seconds. All great choices.
+You can definitely see what carried on into Team Fortress 2 and what didn't. From the game modes to the equipment and that change, that evolution is fun to see.
+One thing I really like about the older Valve games is that they work as soon as you install them. I've had some other old games that need patches, mods, unofficial community made stuff to properly run nowadays but I don't remember having any issues like that with Valve's older games. TFC is very old, Half Life was very old, the original Counter Strike games still sold are very old. I never had to mess with their files to get the games working. Same applies here.
-You never feel like you hit anything. I can't tell if I'm missing, if the stuff I shoot just isn't doing enough damage to be noticable, if its the lack of animations or grunts or all that or if everything I shoot is just somehow phasing through the enemy... I guess its not that surprising I never thought the original Half Life or Counter Strike games were good in this regard so it makes sense that the original Team Fortress isn't good at it either.
-Essentially dead. You can find servers with bots at least.
-The only reason I enjoy Team Fortress Classic is because its a super quick game to install, takes up no space at all, super easy to get into and play and on top of all of that I really like the classes, the mercenaries you get to play as. I always thought the characters in TF2 were incredibly good and in here? Definitely not as memorable or anything but they still look good in my eyes. Aside from these points there is no reason why anyone should play it. TF2 is not only better but free. Yeah its a bigger game, takes longer to install and TF2s current state does not give me the same fun that the older versions did but its still better then this.
I don't think Team Fortress Classic is a bad game. Its a game that I enjoy. Nothing too big, nothing too small. Spend 5 minutes downloading it and play a few quick matches. Easy, quick, fun. But are those few reasons enough to justify buying an old, dying game when a better and free alternative is available? I don't think so. If I gave this game a thumbs up it would be because I'm biased, nothing new I've given thumbs up to other stuff in the past and my main reason behind that was because I was biased and I really wanted to give it a thumbs up even though I didn't feel like it was worth purchasing. Thats why this is receiving a thumbs up too. I don't think its worth purchasing but I really want to give it a thumbs up. For nostalgia I suppose.
