Is this game better than CoD? Yes. Is this game better than Halo? Maybe. Is this a FPS game that everyone should own - especially when it goes on sale for under $5? 100%. Titanfall 2 is an improvement from the first and delivers an amazing campaign, in addition to a rock solid multiplayer experience. In short, the game offers phenomenal replay value and a really fun twist in the FPS genre. Even for an old game the wait times in the multiplayer lobby generally do not take that long. That speaks volumes of this game.
Titanfall 2's gameplay is a step up from the first, which already had rock solid gameplay. The biggest difference from the first was the addition of the campaign. The campaign did a good job explaining the world of Titanfall a little better, which upon first glance can get confusing. It seems as though the player is already fighting on the Earth, however there are structures that appear to project Earth like terrain which can make the whole situation even more confusing. Basically, a giant mining company are being buttheads and want to control resources across a region called the Frontier. In response, militia groups have organized from certain planets in order to fight back against the mining company. The game does a really good job throwing the player immediately in the game; one of the player's mentors unfortunately passes at the start and the player inherits a titan. Instead of being mindless mechs controlled by the user they are sentient machines that bond with their Pilot (or you, the player). From there the story only gets juice-ier and better. Skills used in multiplayer are slowly (and rather perfectly) introduced to the player in the campaign. I would argue that this was one of the best campaigns I have ever played in a video game.
The multiplayer aspect of the game is also very engaging and fun. The biggest difference in the Titanfall series compared to many other FPS games is that fact the player can call in a Titan (or a mech). The bar to call in a Titan fills up as the player progresses and accumulates points, either by taking out AI, Titans, or other enemy players. Titanfall's most iconic game mode (personally) is Attrition, where AI players are also alongside player controlled enemies. This gives inexperienced (or just bad) players a chance to accumulate points and help their team out. Even pilots have a decent chance against titans as they can mount them and use anti-titan weapons on them. Wall riding (and jumping) will play a huge role in how successful players can be in getting away or even attacking others. This was a huge addition to the FPS series and certainly made Titanfall a worth competitor against other games like CoD. Personally, the gameplay is phenomenal top to bottom. From general customization, visual customization, weapon choices, grenade choices, upgrade choices (during game that can be called a few times), and other choices that allow players to really capitalize on their strengths. Some special power ups include the ability to camouflage, disappear into another dimension, stim packs, grapple, radar, etc...
The visuals and graphics are absolutely stunning. I would argue this is one of the most visually appealing games out there due to its nature and how they've managed to contextualize fighting on the Frontier and surrounding areas. Doesn't matter if it's the single player campaign or multiplayer, every aspect of the game looks awesome. Whether it's the animations themselves, the player outfit or weapon customization, the effects, the titans, objects in the environment that can blow up (not all, but some)... literally just everything immerses the player further into the game. The sounds and music were also another notable domain. Music is right on par to set the perfect atmosphere (especially at the start of multiplayer games) and certainly creates a mood as the game progresses (whether multiplayer or single player campaign). Dialogue between characters is spot on and, unlike other games, doesn't become annoying. Both of these realms were really well done.
Overall, I highly recommend this game especially if it is on sale on Steam. This is an awesome game to pickup for a campaign (literally one of the best I've played) or even fun with or without friends on multiplayer. I have over (at least) over 200 hours on Origin and wanted to write a review for the game, and bought it again on Steam. It is extremely rare I give any sort of game this high of a review. Personally, I think this game should've won a lot of awards and should be given way more attention than Call of Duty. The wonderful balance between Pilots and Titans always makes the player feel like they have ultimate control.
