Deponia Review (boxface01)
This is a decent point-and-click adventure game series that is marred (in my opinion) by the type and execution of comedy that it chooses. The main character is an incredibly un-likeable person with virtually no redeeming qualities. He berates and talks down to every person that tries to help him. He takes advantage of any kindness that is shown to him. That would be okay if that wasn't such an integral part of the story, but it is - and I genuinely found it hard to finish because of this.
For comparison, Borderlands takes a comedic approach to the violence of the badlands, but if you do the quests and take an interest in the world, you can see this is mainly a cover for an incredibly dark and horrible experience living on the planet. The comedy (regardless of what you think of it) has a point - even if it is distasteful. Even if you don't care for it at all, you can play the game basically ignoring it.
Deponia has no reason for this comedy - there's no greater context about the main character being some sort of anti-hero (there's probably more context to paint him as the villain). For example; setting his friend's house on fire (and killing their pet bird), robbing the poor, constantly bad-mouthing a person who has let him live free in her house with zero responsibility. These aren't fleeting examples - the whole point of the game is to be a terrible human being in order to 'rescue' his 'love interest' - who he constantly lies to and manipulates. Even when he and the main villain face each other, I wondered why I was even playing the game anymore when the distinction between them was so small.
It's a shame, as the game itself is actually quite solid and enjoyable which is probably why I stuck around to the end. I appreciate any medium or person which can take an interesting, unorthodox approach to comedy. Despite that, I still thought this game chose a terrible, grating way to go about its own humor (by making the hero the most degenerate scumbag) and in doing so, really made the game unpleasant to beat.
