Search Review (Eldrarak1982)
So at face value, this game appears to be quite simple. And in fact, it is. But that said, it is absolutely worth the price. In my first play through, I spent 2 hours scouring the heavens for any sign of a habitable world. Unfortunately, I was unable to save humanity. But I feel that my 2 hours were well spent, and I'll gladly play again the next time I get the itch. Even the somewhat-clunky UI elements can be forgiven, because at the end of it all, it's still a fun game for science nerds like myself.
Now, I do have a couple of gripes.
First is in regards to the transit view minimum zoom level. Some of these systems are very large, and because of that, even at the minimum zoom level the outer planets orbit so wide that they completely leave your field of view, leaving you entirely unsure of where they are or when they might return. Scaling this minimum zoom back to that it is certain that all planets would remain in the bounds of the screen would be a great help.
Second is time compression. When scanning systems to capture planet transits, many of them have very large orbits with long orbital periods. Which means if you miss these transits, you have an extremely long wait until that planet might pass by the star again. It would be lovely if there were some way to speed up time beyond what the current controls allow.
That brings me to gripe number 3. The game FEELS like a mad rush. There's not enough time to get a sufficient number of planets scanned and analyzed before the inevitable doom to planet Earth occurs. If there were some way to allow time compression in the planet transit tool, and also extend the total amount of time before the "big event", then I'd give this a glowing review.
All in all, if you are a space nerd, love science, or have dreamed of extra-solar habitable worlds, just get it. You'll be glad you did.
