Unravel Review (AyMeN)
Ah Unravel, potentially THE most frustrating game i played this year, where do i start with this one?
Some backstory:
since EA decided to deeply discount the second game before this one, i got & finished Unravel 2 first, and i remember it being enjoyable but still a bit disappointing since i mainly got it to to play with a friend only to discovered later that its local coop only which is a big shame (but i guess that was on me for not doing my homework before).
i still feel like finishing that one solo really affected how much i could've enjoyed it, but alas, it was still good enough for me to justify buying Unravel 1, thinking i'll surely like that one a lot more with it being a solo experience, but boy oh boy how wrong i was..
Unravel 1 might be my first game ever that i bought directly from the steam store and deeply regret not refunding it when i was able to, why you might ask?
simple, because of the terrible puzzles & poor level design, according to google this game has 12(?) levels, i hated it by the 3rd one (the swamp level) and i'm close to giving up on it altogether by the 5th(?) level (the one with falling rocks)
some puzzles are intuitive and straight forward, others are pure frustration, nobody enjoys being stuck with little to no direction on what to do next, nobody enjoys random unpredictable physics..
The story is close to non existent, can't say i had a chance to properly pay attention to those visions and the meaning behind them with how bad the level design is, but i probably wouldn't have minded it had i enjoyed the rest of the game.
The one saving grace for Unravel 1 is the art style, i absolutely love it, and its one of the 2 reasons i kept pushing through to see the ending (the second one being wanting to get at least some of my money's worth), but i'm not sure it'll be able to carry me all the way through though, we shall see i guess.
Unless you have a high tolerance for frustrating puzzles you're probably better off skipping this one and buying the second one instead.
Giving it a 5/10 just cuz i can still see there was a lot of passion behind this project.
