This game is easily one of the best Fallout games ever, only next to New Vegas.
I haven't played many CRPGs (if any) and man this game is the perfect introduction to the genre. The SPECIAL system is perfectly balanced and is such an innovative stat system for the time. It's honestly amazing how much carried over from this game to the 3D Bethesda titles.
This game certainly has a darker atmosphere than the rest of the series. The ambient music in it is creepy and the fun oldies music is limited to the intro and credits. The atmosphere is easily one of the best parts of the game and makes the game a whole lot worthwhile.
The gameplay is vastly different than the 3D games. The combat system is turn-based and actually uses your AP, which is based off of agility, so that's a very important stat to have in your build. The turn-based combat can make the game quite unforgiving at times, especially if you're like me and picked a low agility build assuming the game would play similarly to 3/NV/4/76. Traversing different settlements is also very different. You move very fast on a small map and sometimes you'll have random encounters. Going to and from the military base can run you into some unmerciful super mutants.
This game is revolutionary for its time and deserves more love. It's seriously one of the best Fallout games of all time. Going to play Fallout 2 next.
