Recommendation:
Would I recommend this game? Absolutely, this is a cinematic masterpiece. It's truly the magnum opus of the Arkham series. In my opinion, it's one of the best games made to date. There was so much care put into the making of this game, from the big moments all the way down to the small details. It's truly a great game.
The graphics are amazing, especially if you have a decent rig to run it on max settings. I did have one issue, which I'll mention below. The writing in this game is fantastic, and the voice acting and sound design are superb. There are many bells and whistles to learn, especially compared to the previous Arkham games, but the controls and combinations flow nicely for the most part, with only occasional input misreading. The base game is definitely the highlight of the series, and for the experience alone, I would recommend it.
The side missions (DLC) are decent little missions that can be done in about 30 minutes to an hour each. They aren't anything special but are some extra fun. This game, like the previous ones, has challenges. While I generally dislike challenges in games, some here are interesting, like the old-school Batman race sets and other maps. Doing the challenges for 100% did bring my satisfaction with the game down, so if they were not needed to be played, this would have been a game with close to perfect marks for me. This game is also easier to complete for completionists compared to Arkham Asylum and City, which is a bonus and feels like the series ends on a nice note rather than a frustrating one.
This game is one of the few that I would say is 100% worth the asking price. However, since it often goes on sale, I would wait for a good discount. Better yet, all the Arkham games are amazing and worth buying. I recommend getting the "Batman: Arkham Collection" bundle, which includes all three games and their DLC. This bundle also frequently goes on sale, so wait for a good deal to get the most bang for your buck.
Technical Issues:
I encountered a technical issue about 30 minutes into the game when trying to cross the bridges into the “Panessa Studios” area. As soon as I got halfway across the bridge, the game would crash persistently. Verifying my files found two damaged/missing files, and re-acquiring them fixed the issue. I didn't have any other technical problems for the rest of the base game.
I did experience one crash at the end of Batgirl's side story after the final cinematic, but it wasn't anything major as this was after the final cinematic played.
Achievements:
DLC is required for 100%, and this is included with the Batman: Arkham Collection.
The achievements in this game are the easiest out of all the Arkham games. Even though this game has the most achievements, you'll get most of them as progression rewards during your first playthrough. There are no missable achievements that I know of or encountered. For Arkham Knight, I highly recommend doing your first playthrough blind without a guide. Only use guides at the end of the game to tidy up what you've missed for maximum enjoyment.
A big thing to consider is to ignore all the collectables until the end of the game if you're following a guide. This way, you can follow along without confusion. Try to get some of the miscellaneous achievements while you play to save time at the end. There's a good guide by "Steven" in the Steam guides, which you can check out here. Skip the sections to avoid spoilers and just check out the “Misc. Achievements” section to see what to keep in mind as you play.
For my first playthrough, excluding NG+, DLC side stories, and the bulk of the AR challenges, it took me 38.8 hours to complete 76 out of the 113 achievements. I took my time, enjoyed the game, and did everything blind except for the collectables, for which I used a helpful guide by "Remedy" with videos of the collectables by area. You can view that here. So you can definitely take your time and enjoy the game and still make fast progress.
The DLC side stories aren't bad, but watch out for Batgirl's side story, which has the only semi-missable achievements I think. Make sure you get everything you need before going to the final area. Other than that, you only need to complete the other side stories to get their achievements.
The AR Challenges in this game are easier than in the previous games. They are still difficult but more forgiving, I found. Some achievements, like "The Curtain Falls," are extremely challenging and have a low unlock rate globally, and it’s easy to see why once you start trying them. These are purely skill-based with a bit of RNG; there’s no easy way to get them, so don't get discouraged. Take breaks, walk away, and breathe. These challenges can be frustrating and may make you want to pull your hair out like they did me.
All in all, the achievements for Arkham Knight are doable, with really only the three hard AR Challenge achievements being the real kicker for this game. I had no issues with achievements popping, except for one annoying one for the campaign that required eight jumps, which was a bit temperamental to unlock.
