PLEASE PLAY THIS GAME. I bought this one sale (like I usually do with video games), and so for me it cost 6$. Do NOT look up any information or spoilers on this game. I will give you a rough idea on what to expect and why remaining spoiler free is very important.
I have recently played a game called "TUNIC" where the entire game is one giant puzzle, with good game play on top of it. This game accomplishes the same thing with different methods. Beyond the Long Night is a roguelike where you're an "explorer" trying to escape being trapped beneath a mountain, and every time you die you respawn back at the start. There are mechanics in the game that are INCREDIBLY thoughtful and deserve lots of praise for how perfect they accomplish multiple goals, one of them being "the storm", a force that forces you to progress faster up the mountain, even if that means skipping some rooms you haven't seen.
I "beat the game" after about 3-4 hours on the intended difficulty, "hard", but when I saw that the stories were only 40% complete, I realized I missed quite a bit. I thought id just play the game like once more, but after finding some game breaking secrets, I realized that escaping the mountain is the easiest goal you can achieve, as there are other goals that require puzzle solving, exploring, and planning to accomplish. I don't want to spoil too much, but treat this game like a puzzle game, not only will solving puzzles make the game significantly easier (as they unlock permanent upgrades occasionally), but they advance the story. Don't be afraid to die in the process, and PAY ATTENTION TO DIALOGUE, in the "journal" you can keep track of the most important information NPC's will tell you, but paying attention to what some of them say will give you an extra boost on where to look and what to do.
The game is challenging mind you, and I only win 1/3 rounds on average even after playing for 10 hours. Just realize that this game wants you to solve the mystery of the mountain.
10/10 game. I would have bought it at 20$ if I knew what experience it would give me.
