More of the same, with some slight improvements, few new ideas, few problems and this time seemingly less content with steeper price.
This is not a bad game. I like this series. It's very casual oriented, which fits me just fine, even if I don't care for the cat puns. But I think the developers have stagnated a little, even if this is possibly what the majority wants.
PROS
+ More of the same, good presentation, decent casual gameplay.
+ Some promising additions, like the new 2D "dungeons", but there isn't enough of it and it's very simplistic.
+ Decent amount of variety on all fronts, even if everything has the same basic core, you will be engaged the whole time.
+ Well presented map with quest icons.
CONS
- Ship controls without gamepad are infuriating, and even with it, far from elegant, with you having to do loops around enemies that have figured out the secrets of autoiming turrets. Then again, if the game had good controls, the ship combat would be even more trivial than it already is.
- Camera on the main map feels weird, the position is too close to the ground, giving you this weird feeling that they tried to make a blend between 2D and isometric, which is obviously impossible - compare with the isometric camera in first game, you can see yourself and the enemies a lot better, here, everything feels a bit squashed, like 2D sprites in original DOOM or something.
- I didn't really care for most of the loot - I just settled for one melee weapon and a pistol, I only changed melee few times, until I got the ultimate weapon, and I've only cared for few basic stats for my armor. This could be because I'm playing basically the same game for the third time, but it rarely gives you incentive to change your loadout, but when it does, it's more annoying than anything, because there is no quick button to switch weapons etc.
- While the story isn't more important than gameplay, it clearly matters, but it feels more simplistic and plain than ever. Again, maybe it's just because I've played it before.
- No replay value for me personally - the gameplay is so basic (nothing wrong with that), it gives me no pleasure to just do it again. I care about the content, and after consuming it all, I'm done.
This game cannot compete with many others on the gameplay front - it's way too simplistic, and devs don't seem to have the incentive to change it. At the same time, there are some ideas (like enemies that are weak and resistant to certain types of attacks), which unfortunately aren't expanded (no quick way to switch weapons, no loadouts, at least I didn't notice anything).
I have spend 24 hours in Cat Quest 1, 36 in Cat Quest 2, and 11 in this one, without the desire to play it again. I didn't feel bored, my opinion is mixed, and I'm only giving negative, because but I think the overwhelmingly positive rating is inflated by the fans of the series and the devs aren't in such a good place to receive just endless praise.
If you're content with what you got, that's fine, and you can eagerly await 10 other sequels, as the developers have no doubt found their retirement plan, but I want more. Those games aren't that special, and the devs risk milking them to death.
