I want this review to serve two purposes. Not only to say my opinions on this chapter, but for this to act as a look into the past at what the state of the game was around this time. Lets jump right into it with Elodie.
With a character that forces you to have to turn your volume down cause her scream is so unbearably loud, you know she's got to be great. She's not. She's Claudette 2.0. Her perks are like this chapter, bad. Appraisal is just a worse version of Plunderers. But the best part is how people thought it was still fun to use on the PTB, and the devs said "this was not the intended use for Appraisal" and didn't nerf it, they just took some of the fun elements out of it. Deception is just like the name, deceptive. It's not good and has only ever worked on me once, and it wasted a whole 10 seconds. The amount of things that need to go right for this to do its mediocre job is insane. Power Struggle is ok but not groundbreaking. It's fun and goes well with Flip-Flop, but it's not that amazing.
Next, the Twins. This was the most brainless killer they have ever made. On the PTB, Victor couldn't do anything about people in lockers. The exit gate blocking mechanic didn't work cause when you smacked someone Victor came off and they could just crawl out. You also couldn't recall Victor allowing 1 survivor to rob you of your entire power for the whole game. This just goes to show that they did not even ONCE test the killer before putting it on PTB, cause one game would've revealed all these problems considering the community learned all this in the first hour. This PTB was also so buggy that, and I'm not exaggerating, many of the perks literally did not function. They had no use. The killer also had so many bugs that playing them was a nightmare and figuring out what she could do was impossible. But the most egregious part, is that 90% of the bugs were not fixed upon the actual release of the chapter, many of which being game breaking bugs that prevented the Twins from even being used in a match. And as of writing this review many of the bugs are still in the game. Best part is that literal game breaking bug fixes didn't get implemented until an entire week after launch. And spoiler alert, this killer sucks unless you just hard camp. Leave victor by the hook and go do stuff as Charlotte then swap back the moment anyone goes near the hook. She's aids to play against and not rewarding to play as.
Her perks are also like this chapter, they get worse the deeper you dive in. Hoarder is useless. It's benefit is negligible and can actually provide survivors with more items. Oppression is lackluster. Just another somewhat ok ability slaughtered by an eighty second cool-down. Coup de Grace is a fairly weak perk that could've made it into some fun niche builds with Spirit and Wraith. However, this perk that was universally called weak and not useful received a nerf out of PTB to shock from the community. The weakest killer perk added was nerfed for no reason. It's borderline useless now.
In terms of content added, it ends here. My opinion is very simple, DO NOT BUY THIS CHAPTER. However, for those who want to have a further look at what things were like on release and as of writing this, read on.
This update also didn't come with a map but instead 2 map reworks. Autohaven was the first and it looks fine as all map reworks do, but just like all map reworks the gameplay takes a massive hit with the inclusion of breakable walls creating infinites with the band aid idea of breaking the wall to get rid of it. These maps also had insane dead zone issues that they said they fixed, but from my experience haven't. Also the most killer sided map "Azarov's Resting Place" was not changed at all and still to this day remains possibly unbeatable against a killer who just sets up a 3 gen. Next was Ormond which got worse. The outer ring of the map still has insane tile chaining for survivors making it impossible to catch them, but also can spawn some nasty dead zones. The worst part however is the main building that now has become even more survivor sided then it already was. It also show cases of breakable walls that benefit neither the survivor nor killer, simply acting as annoying obstacles for both sides. Also for both these reworks, hope you're not a console player who already deals with crap optimization issues.
This not only is the worst chapter content wise, but marks the lowest point in DBD history from a gameplay and developer perspective as far as I'm concerned. The devs in this one chapter alone have been put on blast and rightfully so by releasing an outright unfinished product and damaging the game severely for everyone. But we can dive deeper. This chapter is to be followed up by possibly the worst mid-chapter, where the HUD is being changed as well as the Clowns rework. The Clown's rework is a confusing mess that provides no real benefit to him. His new "speed up bottles" do not provide any tangible benefit. Many counter arguments float around saying they're go but trust me, 9/10 times they are not actually helping, or the math shows that it's so minor it will almost never matter. This all raises the question on how long they spent coming up with this idea that clearly had no thought put into it? But moving to the HUD, The community is currently in universal hate of the changes. While the devs did make the hud better than on the PTB by moving many aspects to the corners of the screen, it still begs the question of why this changed needed to happen at all?
However I would like to address the act that to me, shows BHVR for the spineless shell of a corporation they really are. Almo, a less than steller game dev (do your own research on his thoughts on balancing it's hilarious) was asked about color blind settings in DBD, as despite being a frequently asked constantly, it has yet to be added over the almost 5 years this game has been out. This question was also important as the new HUD made many changes that negatively effected color blind players. He responded by telling them to stop with there blabbering and that they may or may not get around to it. I'm sorry for being rude, but how does someone ever think a response like that is ok? Almo was someone who I thought was bad at balancing the game, but was still a nice guy who had good intentions. This makes me feel otherwise. This sparked pure anger in the community which leaked into actual gaming news articles jumping on to bombard them. Rightfully, the devs panicked and hastily showed color blind setting were coming and that they had "been working on it for months". Going back to edit this, they did get added. The devs now claim they're on an "accessibility quest". You know those thing most games have day 1. Only took them 5 years. These people also post about social justice and claim to want to stand up against oppression and hatred btw. Makes you think how much they really care about what they preach.
Blights chapter was the highest point I had seen in DBD, and coming off that to this was like falling into the Grand Canyon. My trust with BHVR is eroding and many others are as well. They time and time again don't deliver any worth while product and end up making the game worse with each passing chapter as bugs remain in the game for months, sometimes years to come. This also isn't mentioning the awful winter event with an Advent calendar that had basically no rewards, or login/code rewards that you normally would've just gotten for free. Or the devs acting like, ironically, babies towards people who called Victor a baby, with people getting banned on there Discord server over this. But hey don't worry, at least we can have solace in the fact that from now on, when ever BHVR makes unfinished products and crap design decisions, we as players can get an o so generous 300,000 bloodpoint reward for "sticking with them". However long that lasts.
TLDR: Bad
