Let me tell you a story about old Freddy Krueger (aka the Nightmare in-game)
When the Nightmare was released, he had the worse kit imaginable. Lemme tell you what it did.
You looked for a survivor, right clicked on them, wait seven seconds for them to fall asleep, during that time the survivor would flee as quick as possible and you couldn't attack them, then be thrown into the dreamworld. This is when Freddy can attack and injure survivors.
That's all he did, he didn't have any additional powers in his kit. All it did was make actions slower and allow him to see survivors outside his terror radius. I think at one point bhvr gave him the oblivious status effect while in the dream world but come on, that wouldn't help him.
Survivors could easily leave the dreamworld by failing a skill check on any action or by another survivor waking them up. Basically allowing you to counter Freddy's power so easily because he would have to do the same process of dragging you into the dream world.
He remained a trash tier killer until BHVR actually gave him justice and reworked him. He didn't just leave the trash tier, he is a strong killer and some even call him Overpowerered.
How does this relate to the Trickster? Any killer that has a garbage kit is pretty much called old Freddy due to how bad it was.
The Trickster is old Freddy, he took that crown off the Clown.
The Trickster power is poor mans version of Huntress, Deathslinger and you could even say The Plague.
What does it do? He throws knives... yeah, he just throws knives but here is the real kicker. Unlike most ranged killers, landing your power does not immediately put the survivors in an injured state. You have to throw eight knives to fill the survivors Laceration Meter to damage a survivor. Yes the knives that are very inaccurate and fly all over the place need to land eight times to injure a survivor. You have 60 blades so you'll be missing 80% of them.
Not to mention that Laceration Meter decays if they haven't been hit by blades for a whole or if a survivor is injured by a basic attack.
If enough blades hit the survivor, he can activate his special attack called Main Event that takes forever to charge btw, which allows you to throw them like a submachine gun. During this he has unlimited knives and isn't slowed while throwing them (how kind of bhvr.)
Not to mention that he is slowed while he is chucking knives, so survivors can run around any object that allows it to block their hitbox to counter your power.
"But his power is good around loops and pallets!" Yeah? So is the Huntress power and deathslinger with instant results.
Lets go through the killer power check list:
Does his power allow map pressure? No
Does he have map mobility? No
Does he have any insta down? His ultra rare addon allows this but you have to spam it from the maximum distance.
Does his power help him in chases? Not really, other ranged killers do this better.
He lacks an identity to make him stand out differently from killers. He is literally a poor mans Huntress.
His addons allow him to either fill the Laceration Meter faster, hold more knives, throw them faster, move faster while firing them or reduce Laceration Meter decay. Some of his addons actually allow his knives to bounce when hitting the environment or explode when interacting with the environment. However this should be in his kit instead of being addons. What the fuck Bhvr?
His perks aren't really groundbreaking.
- Starstruck is not really worth taking.
- Hex Crowd control would be good if it wasn't a hex.
- No Way Out is actually a good pick if you're going for a end game build.
No Way Out is pretty much one of the better perks in Tricksters DLC.
I have ranted about his kit but what about the killer itself visually?
The Trickster looks awesome. There is a lot of smooth brains complaining that he doesn't fit the game while saying some really nasty things (way to represent the dbd community). I do agree to an extent, he sticks out like a sore thumb and his appearance is pretty goofy especially with the yellow vibrant eyes the but it doesn't completely fail, he also has a cool looking neon baseball bat with the handle having Brass knuckles.
He does have something that most killers really don't have. Personality.
He will at times look at the players during the lobby sequence and wink at them, he laughs occasionally in the game giving him that unhinged and crazed killer vibe. He has a multitude of stylish animations (except for his knife throwing) and his mori is awesome. I forgot to mention that he actually has voice lines in Korean. He has personality which makes him so much different to the killers and this pleases me.
He also wins the award for the best chase theme, not only is it horrifying but if you listen closely, you can actually hear the sounds of human screams, adding more to this unique killer. Its meant to do something with his lore but I don't see the reason for talking about his lore.
Now the survivor... She is aright.
Yun-Jin Lee perks seem to cater to a portion of survivors bitching about how other survivors are ruining their game and being effective in chases. I don't really play survivor so I can't really tell you. She also... screams really loud.
Might as well wrap up this rant with a closing rant.
This killer is a clear example of why BHVR does not listen to its players. This killer was in PBE for so long with players telling BHVR that the Trickster was garbage and that he needed changes or even a reworkof his kit. But they barely did anything and chucked him out the door with a clearly lacking kit.
This guy was hyped. People were excited for this killer and they should have gotten a quality killer.
Why did BHVR bother to visually make him pleasing, have voice lines, a awesome chase theme and a animated trailer to go with it? WHY?
Save your money, this killer is hot garbage and BHVR should be ashamed that they had failed this DLC and its players that were hyped for him.
