Roots of Dread adds a new killer, The Dredge, a new survivor, Haddie Kaur, and a new map, the Garden of Joy.
First things first, our new killer, The Dredge. The Dredge has a couple cool abilities, the main one being it's ability to teleport to any locker on the map. This allows for a lot of map pressure, and info as well, if you pass through a survivor you'll gain killer instinct and know exactly where they are. The only form of counterplay to this come in the form of locks. Once per game, per locker, a survivor can apply a lock to make your exit from a locker a lot louder, and a lot slower. This isn't the worst, but a bigger counter can come completely unintentionally from the map itself. Lots of maps have terrible locker placements, restricting your ability to use your power a lot, and sometimes making it completely useless. The next power comes from preparing this teleport, and is a bit more situational. While charging the teleport, you leave a little remnant behind, that you can teleport back to at any time. This allows you to hold 2 spots of a loop at once, as long as the survivor doesn't get to the remnant first, destroying it. It's a bit harder to get the most out of, but can be a nice way to catch survivors off guard. The last, and likely most effective ability the Dredge has, is nightfall. After damaging survivors enough, the screen will turn black for all of the survivors, making you undetectable, and making it almost impossible to see anything in front of them. This lasts for a pretty substantial amount of time, and gives you ample opportunity to make big moves and make up for a losing match. Overall, the Dredge has a pretty interesting kit with a lot to work with, and while its not my favorite killer, its definitely a lot of fun.
Now for it's perks, while not terrible, the Dredge lacks any big standouts. Darkness revealed is a decent aura perk that shows you the aura of any survivor near a locker every so often when you open a locker. This can be good on killers that actually make use of lockers, but the vast majority of the time, you're better off using aura perks that don't interrupt the flow of gameplay. Dissolution is a perk that activates as a survivor takes damage, making pallets break when any survivor does a fast vault over them. This one is ridiculously situational, and I'd only really recommend it for killers that can do damage passively, like the Plague or the Trapper, and even then, its still mostly a gimmick perk that won't change much, just like the next perk, Septic Touch, which causes exhaustion and blindness while healing. This is a bit more applicable, working well with anti heal builds, but again, there are better alternatives for both anti heal and exhaustion. None of these perks are downright bad, they're just very specific and none of them really stand on their own.
Haddie is the survivor paired with the Dredge, and comes with 3 perks of her own. Inner Focus lets you see other survivor's scratch marks, and reveals the killer's aura when a nearby survivor is injured. I'm going to be honest, with most perks I can see some value, at least in a meme build or something, but this just seems worthless to me. I can't think of a scenario where seeing someone else's scratches would be helpful, and while the aura reading sounds nice, they have to be nearby, so if your paying attention, you probably already know where the killer is, and if you want a better idea, Alert does a much better job. Residual Manifest gives the killer blindness when using a flashlight, and ensures that you'll find a flashlight once per match in a chest. This is another perk that doesn't really do much, but it at least works if you wanna bully the killer and make the flashlight spam sting that much more. Overzealous makes you do gens a little faster after you break a totem, until you get hurt. This buff is almost entirely unnoticeable, and with the prevalence of boon totems, it encourages you to waste time and hurt your team for nothing. Needless to say, Haddie does not have a lot to offer, which is a real shame. She has a lot of cool ideas going for her, and increases the diversity of the game's roaster, but with her lack of cosmetics (even less than characters that came out months after than her) and her complete lack of any good perks, it feels like BHVR just kinda shot her out without any effort and forgot about her.
The new map added is the Garden of Joy. I know a lot of my friends don't really like this map, but personally, I don't mind it. Its a pretty small map, comprised of a house surrounded by some light woods, with a road in between the house and some jungle gym tiles and the shack. Its nothing too crazy, I don't really get excited to play on it or anything, but its got a nice amount going on, and doesn't feel too biased towards either side. It does its job.
Overall, this DLC chapter kind of lacks value. All of it's perks are situational at best, and do nothing at worst. The dredge is cool, but you're probably better off just buying it with iridescent shards. Haddie is cool, but with her perks being so worthless, you should only really grab her if you want to play as her specifically, or just want to fill out the entire roaster, but again, you can jsut buy her with shards, especially if you aren't interested in the Dredge. If you're buying all of the DLCs, leave this one towards the end, most of the other DLCs have far more to offer.
