Vergil's Downfall on the surface seems like a good DLC. A new campaign, new character with his own weapons and combos, as well as 2 new enemies and 1 new boss, all of that for 9 dollars. Seems like a reasonable deal, except when you get around to replaying the campaign and see it's actually not.
Let's start with the DLC's main selling point - the character: This is the second time Vergil is playable in the entire series, as DMC4:SE came out 2 years later and the only advantage he has over mainline Vergil in DMC3:SE is that he actually has more than one combo on the Yamato and some added aerial options. Reboot Vergil, however still has pretty limited moveset, as he only has two weapons - Yamato and the Summoned Swords, has gimmicky interactions with enemies and is generally buggy.
Yamato's high time doesn't work half of the time.
Demonic attacks are nowhere near as powerful as Arbitrer nor Eryx making fights drag out for way too long.
Judgement cut doesn't target enemies like it does in mainline games, here it was changed to a column of slices that spawns a set distance in front of Vergil.
Witches are even more gimmicky when using Vergil. For whatever reason, angelic Yamato's attacks don't damage their shields half the time, the only reliable way to do so is with summoned swords and the demonic blades they spawn either can't be or are much harder to reflect with Yamato.
Vergil has horrible stagger for heavier enemies, so the only real way to fight Butchers and Tyrants is to do a Solar Flare or Atomic and combo them in the air with what limited options you have at your disposal.
Terrible hitboxes of the main game persist. I feel I got caught mid-air with a ground attack way too many times.
Trick action sucks as an alternative to Dante's dodges. Often times you'll be pressing jump or trick up/down just as the attack is about to hit you but Vergil will still take damage due to start-lag.
Vergil will sometimes get stuck falling in place, which he can only get out of by teleporting to enemies with summoned swords.
I'd like to make a separate paragraph about Hell and Hell because this is probably the last difficulty you'd be playing this DLC on and also where the cracks are most visible. In some places if an enemy hits you and makes you fall off the platform, there's a good chance you'll get up past the "fall out of the map and take damage point", making Vergil fall until the player quits the mission or reloads last checkpoint. Also on my HaH mission 6 playthrough, I got a game over despite having one more gold orb and when I pressed "continue", the game gave me a black screen. Several reloads later it started working again and when I finished the mission, my death count was at 1321, while in actuality I didn't even get hit enough to get more than 10.
With annoying interactions between Vergil and main game enemies out of the way, let's cover the new enemies this DLC introduces.
Wisp - A flying demon that needs to be pierced with a summoned sword in order to be damaged. He becomes invulnerable again if he's knocked back with something powerful (yamato swing of judgement cut, Volcano and Stomp among others), can't be knocked down to the void for an environmental kill and when low on health, he gets a Devil Trigger-esque effect no matter the difficulty where you can't teleport to him or make him flinch. A gimmicky enemy which you'll have to face every second wave or at least encounter. Fun.
Imprisoner - A heavy enemy, which had the potential. It looks great and even has plot singificance in the DLC but is heavily brought down by the stupid roots it spawns that can be destroyed only by waiting for them to break. If you won't Solar Flare him into the air and then spam Aerial Rave and Orbit to take him out quickly, you'll find this enemy to be a real pain to fight.
The new boss - Hollow Vergil is just a slightly changed version of last mission's boss from the main game, except now he has 3 phases, all of which reuse Vergil's attacks and are separated with what is essentially a series of QTEs. I wouldn't be even that mad for them reusing it if not for the plot of the DLC, which gives at least 3 other possible bossfights.
As for the plot, this DLC serves as a sequel to the main campaign following Vergil after his fight with Dante where his heart got stabbed. Now he travels through hell and tries to get back to the world of living. I feel like there was a character assasination despite there being little to no material in the main game to begin with. Vergil, seemingly more intelligent than his brother, seems to identify hollow Kat and Dante with their real counterparts as one and the same and keeps believing in things that make him feel negative emotions despite them not being true most of the time. Speaking of Hollow Kat and Dante, they should be made into bosses, the second one especially. It would be leagues above just repeating a boss but this time you as Vergil.
In the DLC you collect healing cross pieces instead of keys and doors to the secret missions which is fine. What isn't fine is how different languages get different locations for collectibles. In mission 2 on the left path there's a small bridge with a cross fragment to collect. If you're playing in english, you'll in fact see a cross fragment, however if you're using spanish like I did, there will be a lost soul hidden on a rock instead. At first I thought my game was bugged but then I verified everything with a spanish walkthrough on YT.
Overall this DLC is cheaply made and not worth your money. Buy it on sale if you care about achievements.
