DOOM 64
-----------------------------------
DOOM 64 is one of the more interesting entries in the DOOM franchise. As with other Nintendo 64 titles, DOOM 64 is not a direct port of the original DOOM PC game to the console, but rather its own self-contained story complete with all-new levels, secrets, and assets. At first glance, it is pretty easy to ascertain that DOOM 64 borrows from classic DOOM only its engine, archetypes, and story points. Every monster has an all-new sprite, sound effects, and, in some cases, all-new variants, such as the nightmare Imp. Each weapon has similar changes as that of the monsters, with notable changes being the dual-bladed chainsaw and the addition of the BFG-like weapon, the Unmaker. DOOM 64 also added another layer to its secret levels by hiding demon runes in each secret level (barring Hectic) that incrementally upgraded the Unmaker. You can complete these secret levels without even collecting or realizing that these demon runes exist. Trust me, they're worth finding especially if you're playing on Watch Me Die! The ambiance of the game is a far cry from the heavy metal mayhem of the original DOOM, opting for a more atmospheric and horror-themed soundtrack and darker, more foreboding lighting and level design. It is a nice change that helps set DOOM 64 apart as a unique entry in the franchise. It is a PC port of a 90's console game, so that is something to take into consideration; if you don't like the feel of those classic DOOM engine FPS games, then DOOM 64 won't change your mind.
QUALITY OF LIFE/MODERNIZATION:
-----------------------------------
As with many of Nightdive's remasters of classic FPS games, they've included a handful of quality of life changes and modern accessibility features that further expands the accessibility of DOOM 64 to a modern audience that doesn't know much about or is not interested in learning about source ports or dealing with emulation issues. Native widescreen support and 60-FPS, controller/gamepad support, addition of the "Lost Levels," and improved mouse and keyboard controls are just a handful of the advertised quality of life upgrades and features.
Overall: 8.5/10
