The 2017 multiplayer video game Friday the 13th (F13) is unfortunately going to go offline in 2024 but I want to make sure I have a review of this gem before it goes. F13 is better than Dead by Daylight gameplay and balance wise in my opinion.
You will either play as the iconic Jason Voorhees or a camp counsellor. As Jason your goal is to kill as many counsellors as you can before they can escape. As a camp counsellor you will be scavenging for supplies to survive and key items to try and escape. Unlike DbD, there are multiple ways to escape and or win the game.
F13 is superior to DbD gameplay wise because Jason as a killer plays better than any one single killer in DbD does. It also features way better survivor gameplay because you have an actual map to explore and loot from. The fact there are multiple ways to win encourage creativity and makes sure no game plays the same as the last one. Another reason I like F13 more is because it features a genuinely fun and friendly player base that will actually roleplay at times instead of being sweaty try hards who throw temper tantrums when things don't go their way like in DbD.
Now if I was making this review after the servers go offline I would have pressed not recommend, but I still think it's worth to give it a shot now especially if you are a fan of the F13 series like I am. There is quite a few easter eggs and Jason's powers are actually quite logic and film accurate. There is a surprising variety of maps to choose from as well and each play differently to each other. My biggest criticism would be that the progression and customization are not very fleshed out and are not worth even glancing at; I would honestly just pretend they don't exist and just focus on having a fun casual experience first and foremost.
F13 is better than DbD, so why is it so much less popular you ask? Well the answer to that question is highly debatable, I personally believe it's because DbD was the inventor of this style of gameplay and has such a dedicated fanbase that they refuse to give anything else a try, meaning DbD will permanently hold the crown in this genre forever unfortunately.
8/10.
