Despite its simple appearance, Hacknet ended up being one of the most complex and captivating games I've played this year. There are no words to describe the experience the gameplay and situations this game'll put you through.
This review is by no means final, for I have not even finished the base game yet. Nonetheless, what I've played through so far already made me want to write a review about it.
Here's a little summary of my experience through the DLC, which I did finish, no spoilers involved:
I followed Hacknet's storyline normally, without really straying. That was until I saw the DLC, Labyrinths, on sale for this christmas. I'd already liked the game so far so I decided to treat myself to a little christmas gift and bought the DLC on discount for 1 (ONE) literal dollar. It's safe to say that was the best decision I'd made in the whole year.
I'll describe the DLC briefly; beautiful, bittersweet, awe-inspiring. To give anyone who's reading this: A little context, I decided to accept the stray quest to initiate the Labyrinths DLC storyline because I wanted something new. At 10 PM.
I just finished the quest at 5:45 AM. If it's not clear by now, I'm pretty slow and I take my time playing games to appreciate everything. But, honestly? Staying up for this was the best thing I could do. It's christmas eve, and this experience was 100% better than any gift I could buy myself.
I'm not going to spoil anything, my only advice, and plead, is that if you buy the game, go in without any spoilers. You'll want to wish you lost your memory just to experience this again. All I have left to say is that the ending almost brought me to tears just by how it was played out. Playing the tune "Dream Head" after it was all over left me such a sense of relief that I don't think I'll ever be able to experience again.
Please, if you're torn between buying this or not, don't think it twice; there is no price for an unforgettable experience. You can always get it on sale if you're cutting expenses.
It's worth it, It really is.
