When Rico gets a call from Javi that a rival archaeologist more associated with the Black Hand has uncovered some secrets on the far off Isla de los Annilos, the pair set off to investigate. But when the duo are cornered by the rival archaeologist and armed Black Hand forces, an untold horror is released on the island and the north east of Solís. Taking hold of a new weapon, it's up to Rico to quell a new and terrifying threat to the people of Solís.
Los Demonios is Just Cause 4's second story expansion. And if i were to make a list of the worst DLC i've ever played over my gaming life, this takes top spot. It's impossible for me to describe my absolute hatred for this DLC without going over Steam's review character limit. It's boring, bland, incredibly repetitive and only becomes more painful to deal with the further you get into re-claiming settlements from the demonic hordes.
During the first mission after the demons are released and all throughout the settlements that get overrun, you'll encounter the singular enemy type that plagues this entire expansion. Flying, bug like creatures that will shoot at you from afar, become homing suicide bombers if left alive too long and are even capable of taking the body of a Black Hand soldier it picks up and controls them to shoot at you.
Not only that but as you progress further into the cleansing of settlements, tendrils will spawn carrying Black Hand vehicles which will shoot at the player while trying to take down the source of the infestation and the nodes guarding it. This gets incredibly annoying as these tendrils will grab hold of AA guns and shoot you out of the air while trying to parachute or wingsuit. These tendrils can be taken down if the vehicle it holds gets destroyed. So best bring some explosive weaponry with you to clear those out as you can't bring any vehicles to those fights. These tendrils and their AA guns made me hate how inaccurate the Skystriker's missiles are and how they work compared to the vastly superior Bavarium Wingsuit from Just Cause 3 with it's actually accurate missiles. Dying and respawning will also just respawn every single one of those tendrils you took out.
Now on the topic of clearing settlements, a number of them will be taken over by the demonic infestation, requiring the player to enter a mystical dome that fries any vehicle that tries to enter it. Tanks, helicopters, jets, all useless. You'll have to constantly move to avoid the demonic bugs (especially when they become suicide bombers) while trying to expose the weakness of each growth. Now they do vary between each settlement but once you've cleared one type of growth, you've cleared them all when you see it again in another settlement. Shooting specific parts of a growth to cause a chain reaction and clean out several more, shooting massive pods to detach them from their roots in the ground, venus fly trap looking plants that need to have their mouths tethered open to expose the weakpoint, mushroom like plants that can be pulled open with an airlifter to shoot the three tiers of weakpoints, shooting some low hanging pods on trees all expose the main node which requires pulling three sides of what looks like a giant egg and shooting the weakpoints inside to finally clear the settlement of the demons.
The best way to deal damage to every growth and the main node itself is by using the new Demon Crossbow. This powerful tool gets ammo from the corpses of all the flying demons you come across, however shooting them with the crossbow isn't advised as the corpses will be flung far away from the player to get any kind of ammo back. The crossbow deals the most damage out of any other weapon when dealing with the enemies and environment of this DLC.
After picking it up, the Demon Crossbow will be set to it's default 'primary' fire with the Quick Draw mode. This Quick Draw allows for faster reloads at the cost of some damage.
Tapping the alternate fire puts it into Overdraw mode with a longer reload but dealing much more damage. Overdraw is useful when dealing with the main node and it's three weakpoints, taking one shot to kill rather than three with Quick Draw.
The only saving grace this DLC gets is that in a majority of these infestations, Black Hand forces will stand against the demons and not attack the player unless they themselves are attacked. Think enemy of my enemy. But if demons kill Black Hand forces, that gives the player the chance to pick up their own weapons (or use mounted miniguns) to shoot down demons without causing them to fly away and retrieve crossbow ammo from them.
The rewards for the DLC are also horrible. Aside from the crossbow that can be called in as a drop after the first mission (good luck getting ammo after the DLC is finished), completing the DLC will reward demon eggs for drops weather you want one egg or a cluster of ten. Shooting the eggs will cause them to spawn demons which do not care about the player calling them in and will just attack anyone and everyone on sight. And these egg drops are bugged as everytime you re-open the game after completely closing it, they'll re-mark themselves as a "New" item in the drops menu. Annoying, but not game breaking.
This unfun slog comes as standard to owners of the Gold and Complete editions of the game. Would i recommend this to people who own Reloaded?
No. Absolutely no. This DLC is the worst thing i've ever played in regards to game DLC and i'm glad i never have to touch it again. DO NOT get this on it's own, just get it alongside the Expansion Pass and even then you'll still want some of the money you spent on it back after playing this. Even if i was PAID to play this DLC i'd ask for the time my life has been wasted playing this back.
