Let's start by saying I played this DLC in 1P mode on normal difficulty. I usually beat the greed in the vanilla Kingdom Two Crowns in one reign. With this goal in mind, I started this DLC. It turned out to be a frustrating experience. A single reign victory is impossible, perhaps if you stick to a speedrun style and calculate every move, it should be possible. This is not my idea of a fun experience. Where the vanilla game makes me come back from time to time, I have abandoned this DLC and will never start it again. If you are like me a SP Kingdom fan, you can skip this DLC and stick to the vanilla game.
THE GOOD
-powers for the ruler
You can unlock powers for the ruler to use
-recruited peasants are not totally defenseless
When recruited they get a spear to defend themselves against minor attacks
-shields
All your people can be equipped with shields to make them less vulnerable against the greed
-army automatically moves after destruction of dock side portal
When all portals at dock side are destroyed, your army automatically moves to the cliff side, to help defend that side. I really like this feature, but also it practically makes the horn hermit useless.
MIXED BAG
-6 islands. I don't see the need for an extra island, it only adds to the speedrun frustration
THE BAD
-walls are weak
The walls are paper thin. Even the highest tier walls get easily overrun in late game.
-pikemen are gone
No other way to make money during winter time then harvesting berries or chopping wood. Or rely heavily on your banker. The fishing from the vanilla game is removed, why ? This seriously takes the speed of progress out of the game.
-puzzles to unlock shrines
Who came up with the idea it would be fun to include puzzles in order to unlock shrines ? I don't get it. It is just frustrating and adds nothing to the game. If I want puzzles, I will play a puzzle game, for the Kingdom series I just want more tower defense coolness.
-switching powers for the ruler
After you unlocked several powers for the ruler, you can switch between the powers. This can be done via a stone that spawns near your castle. It would help the balance of the game if the ruler was able to switch powers at any moment without buying it at the stone.
-is this DLC even designed for SP ?
It looks like this DLC is designed for coop. It might make this game less frustrating if one player covers the left side of the kingdom and the other the right side. I never tried coop.
-little freedom in strategy
The mechanics in this DLC forces you to use an offensive strategy. You cannot rely on your walls and archers during nighttime. You need to use shield defenses which need to be manually triggered by the ruler, buy expensive berserkers each night again or the ruler should be present to help defend by using its powers. Since you can only be present at one side of the kingdom, the other side is likely to be overrun. This makes it extremely frustrating further in the game, the need to go back and forth to both sides of your kingdom each day, to examine the damage and make the necessary repairs. It is almost impossible to visit all 6 islands and unloackables before first winter hits. This combined with the fact there are 6 islands in this DLC, winter kicks in around day 50 and the other mentioned negatives, this DLC basically forces you to use a speedrun strategy. If you turtle, you will face the consequences late game. All in all: big disappointment.
