The enemies drop gold which you use to spend on slight increases to damage, crit chance, defense, and speed. You'll eventually run into a boss (just an enemy with more health and damage, you still just hold left click) who you can't kill, so you go back to a previous stage and kill enemies in a line for gold so you can afford the stats to hold down left click on that boss.
