The first Moss was so impressive, I clearly understood it to be one of the best VR gaming experiences I've had.
Moss: Book II is a safe, iterative sequel that does everything the original game accomplished, and adds more.
Those additions were enough to push Moss: Book II over the top. It's now my favorite VR video game.
The boss fights are spectacular, and require direct interaction from the Reader (you, the player). The Metroid-like traversal/unlocking abilities expand the playable area. The new weapons give new capabilities in combat. The incredible level design is now more continuous and cohesive, rather than separate, visually unconnected "screens." These are some of the additions that made the Moss formula even better.
Both Moss games show how the first-person perspective is actually limiting for VR gaming, despite it being the most realistic. Moss games have ways of viewing & interacting with the world, the player character, and with enemies that will feel unique and powerful to gamers accustomed to first-person VR gaming. This is what it truly means for a video game to be designed and "made for VR."
Even though the gameplay takes place in miniature in front of the Reader, most of the levels are cleverly designed to have life-sized elements. I call it as "dual-scale environments." It's incredible and so very cool.
I felt a few gripes as I played Moss: Book II, but never mind that. It's minor stuff that can't prevent it from being my new favorite VR game. I hope Polyarc will make good on the ending's tease for a Book III!
