I'd always heard that Psychonauts was basically a platforming classic, but I'd never had the chance to play the game before now, which is a shame because I think I would have really liked it if I played it when I was a kid.
I think my favorite thing about Psychonauts is the world building. I love the world of the game, it really pulls you in. The game also has a really good sense of humor that for the most part still holds up all these years later. The game is just overall really charming. The gameplay is also really fun. Psychonauts has some of the most imaginative levels I've seen in a platformer. The fact that they're all the inside of various characters minds is really cool and leads to some unique concepts. Honestly the only thing I didn't like much were the boss fights. A lot of then were just really frustrating for all the wrong reasons, and they never communicate really well what you're supposed to be doing.
Now for anyone with a steam deck, I played the entire game on steam deck and it ran really well after some adjustments. If you try to boot up the game as is you'll get a glitch where the camera is just constantly spinning and is basically unplayable. Using proton experimental fixes the problem entirely though. After that though I was getting an issue where none of the buttons were working and I could only control the game by bringing up the steam decks keyboard. So if this happens to you I would suggest either picking a community layout or just manually bind all the keys yourself. I kind of did a mix of both, chose a community layout but kept changing things around until I got a layout I really liked. This was the first game I've used the back buttons, ended up assigning some of the powers to them. The game also shows icons in prompts for keyboard keys instead of controller buttons, so unfortunately you'll have to memorize what button does what.
