They didn't try very hard at all with the VR implementation, it feels more like a low-effort flatscreen mod with barely any visual depth and a strange warping to the UI. Not to mention it's a complete headache to play for even short amounts of time. Do not acquire this game if the VR mode is what brought you here.
Rez, as a remaster, isn’t pleasant either. Despite being a key feature, the music seldom builds into anything memorable, the levels’ short loops quickly get repetitive, and the constant shooting creates this pitter-patter that doesn't quite line up with the background. When the screen gets busy it gets nearly impossible to read. The retro-techy visuals aren't much more impressive than they are on the PS2.
However, Area X is a whole different story. It’s a completely different game with cohesive music and appealing/readable presentation. It’s a massive leap forward from what Rez introduces itself as. The controls are far better and now offer freedom over your movement, which adds layers of potential to the game.
But getting this game just for one really good 15-minute level is a hard sell. The fact that this stellar ‘side experience’ didn’t get to become the look and feel of the rest of the game is frustrating.
