I like the way the game plays a lot. I am not particularly good (so far mainly played Ryu, Manon and Marisa to Platinum 3) but would say I have a decent level of understanding of the game's mechanics for a casual. Graphics are great in my opinion.
I stopped playing for a few months (life commitments) and 100% was coming back to play Akuma (who is my favourite character in the SF universe alongside Sagat, Adon and Evil Ryu).
That was until.... I actually tried to buy the character. Up to that point I had not been interested in DLC characters (Rashid and Ed, although both look very cool and almost got me tempted) so I did not look at how to buy them. What prevented me from purchasing Akuma, from coming back to the game and pushed me to leave a negative review has already been summarised by others, but I will write the reason again.
So basically:
-The character is a paid DLC that I can't buy from the DLC section of the game on Steam
-The character costs a certain amount of coins, but I cannot directly spend money to buy that exact amount of coins
-Instead I have to buy a bundle of those coins, with the lowest priced bundle close to the coin cost of the character but not quite enough
-So I need to either buy 2 bundles of the lowest price, which means I pay more than what the character's price is
-Other solution is to pay for the bundle that gives enough coins, but the amount of coins is higher than the coin price of the character, so again I pay for more than the character's coin price
-So Capcom forces me to spend more than I would if I were to purchase the character directly with real money, which is incredibly scummy since they are the ones setting character prices and decide which amount of money gives you which amount of coins.
I am very well aware that it is a tactic used to not only make you spend more money than what you are willing to for a DLC, but it is also to entice you to spend even more on the game afterwards because, after your first purchase, you already have left over coins since you HAD to buy more coins than required so you could afford to buy that specific DLC.
So you might as well use those extra coins on something else... But wait, the amount of extra coins is not enough to buy anything else!!
But there is a solution!! Yes, you guessed it, you need to buy extra bundles of coins to make up the difference...
And all of that, IN A PREMIUM GAME THAT COSTS YOU 60€ to begin with!!!
I understand monetisation tactics when games are free to play - I have spent money on free to play games to buy DLCs and what not. I have even spent money on other fighting games like Guilty Gear Strive and Granblue Fantasy Rising Versus where I bought the character pass/bundle even though the game was full price (60€).
But a full price game that also has those despicable tactics to make you spend even more than necessary through convoluted in game coin pricing shenanigans? Nah, miss me with that nonsense.
Thank you Capcom, you made me realise that I actually don't need to come back to your game, even though I would love to play Akuma. All of that because of all your greed and stupidity.
I will play other fighting games to scratch that competitive itch, and will gladly spend money on games that do not think that the customer is a pay pig that needs to be tricked into spending more money than necessary through in game pricing nonsense.
To end on a positive (side) note: I am waiting for FATAL FURY City of the Wolves (scheduled to early 2025), that game looks awesome!
