Starting point: I LOVE Surviving Mars. I really do. I saw that this DLC has mostly negative reviews, so i waited and got it on sale. I figured, it's still adding things to the game, like the train DLC, it will still be more things to play with even though people are not fond of some of them.....I was wrong.
Playing with the DLC while activity doing the mechanics, actively makes the game WORSE.
I ended up typing a lot below, but one major thing i didn't want to bury is that it crashes/freezes A LOT. No mods, i can play and have thousands of colonists and a dozen or so domes and 1000 drones. Fine. Oh but the minute i start doing things on Below and Beyond...crash/freeze. So much before i would click on the landers i would save because 50% of the time it would freeze/crash.
Let's run through the concept, you can go underground and make a colony down there if you are ok with the game crashing/freezing.
Cons:
-It's kind of a small area, so only in special little areas you can maybe fit a medium dome or a small/micro dome. So you are likely not just going to go full Dwarfs and build a cool underground colony.
-Oh to do things underground you need a special resource from the asteroids. Which means you have to keep the surface colony going, and fly to the asteroids, which now means you have manage 3 layers of the game.
-Fussing with the asteroids is just a chore, there is little room, not really a lot of resources to be worth it. Well besides for the stuff you need for the underground.
-Ok so the underground...you can't do any landscaping down there at all. It's not like oh i clear out this part of the underground, but ''OHH i didn't build supports and so it collapses'' Nope just a bunch of tiny paths with 2 wonders little space.
-Do the asteroids have enough to really hang out on? No. Hell the underground really doesn't have much in it besides the wonders which are hit and miss.
-If you were going to play an underground colony, it would basically take away the endgame that is the Green planet DLC which is great.
-Speed round....exploring the underground while trying to run cables and build drone hubs, sucks, it's tedious, going to asteroids and re making all your buildings for power and such, tedious. Crashes/freezing, sucks.
Pros
-There are TWO techs in the new tree that are good, the one that extends drone hub range and the ones that allows you to turn any building in a prefab.
-I guess the wonders are cool, but half of them are like oh now you can build a dome here. And it'a lot of work to be able to build a dome or have a little vista there, since i can do that about any where on the surface.
When i play these days, i will play without it turned on, or keep it turned on just to get those 2 techs, but i never go underground or to the asteroids.
