First of all let me say, Tekken 7 is an excellent entry into the fighting series. As someone who's played since Tekken 3, I think the improvements to the graphics and mechanics of the game are excellent, and the new characters and features make the game itself worth getting.
As for this DLC however: I'm very disappointed in the offerings. I have the season pass, so I'll be getting the rest of the DLC as it comes out as well, but I can't actually recommend purchasing this DLC for it's price. Tekken Bowl is fun, don't get me wrong, but the lack of online multiplayer, and the inability to play local with more than 1 opponent (can't we just pass a controller around for 5 or 6 players?) are major drawbacks. Striker is a fun mode to add variation, but it doesn't make up for the otherwise lacking content in this mode. Add to that the inability to use customized characters in Bowl mode (you only get the stock costumes for each character), and you have a mode that lacks replayability.
The customizations also fall flat for me. I do really love making custom costumes for my characters, but I'm not particularly interested in the fan-service offerings in this paid DLC. For you money you get, two bikinis for each female character (minus Leo), a Fundoshi for each male character (minus Bob), and an old-timey swimsuit for Bob and Leo. For Xiaoyu and Alisa, you get a school uniform top, and bottom. For a handful of the femal characters, you get a single Idolmaster Crossover costume, none of which I am personally interested in.
It would have been nice to get a few more standard costume pieces, or hairstyles, that we could use to create custom costumes. It would have been nice to get some of the story-mode only costumes people have been modding the game to get, and it would have been nice to have at least 2 or 3 items for each character in the game. While it had been advertised as having around 50 new costumes in the game, it's closer to 20 when you consider the single-costumes given to multiple players. And all of it has been available in arcades for quite some now, so we've gotten nothing new.
None of this adds $14.00 worth of content to the base game. The special characters will add some value in the coming DLC, but I hope they are paired with more content updates (costumes, stages, game modes) if I'm going to consider the season-pass purchase to be worth it.
What would I like to see in the next DLC packs?
How about bringing back some classic Tekken game modes that are conspicuously missing from this installment. Namely Survival mode, and Team Battle mode. How about some new costumes pieces for all of the characters (not just the arcade content that hadn't been ported yet). At this point it seems like a lot to ask, but what about Tekken Force Mode, or something analogous to it? Maybe add an online mode to Tekken Bowl? There's plenty of options for Bandai Namco to give its fans (and paying customers) something that is worth the investment.
I'm holding out for future free DLC packs with classic Tekken characters (c'mon Mokujin!), and hopefully some other quality content. They've been rumored, but not officially announces as far as I'm aware. The season-pass model for this game came with the promise of continued support and new content for at least a year after the game launched, and I hope that this promise is kept. At this point, while I highly recommend the base game, I cannot recommend this DLC at its asking price. Wait for a sale I guess.
