This is an awesome game at it's core. Unfortunately, the game looks nothing like all of the screenshots because everything was made crappier for some other VR system. The graphics look like, or worse than, graphics back in 2016 when I first started playing VR. The controls are also a hot mess. Climbing doesn't work at all. You have to release one hand completely for about one second, then move, and it still feels wrong. The wrong spells are used quite frequently.
Following the instructions of a review here, I was able to downgrade the game to a previous version. Graphics were improved, but there were some drawbacks. The sounds are worse. You can hear enemies that are supposed to be hiding even when the encounter is quite far. However, all of the motion controls worked way better for me in the older version. Climbing was fixed. I'm using an HTC Vive with Valve Index controllers.
It's a shame to have to leave a thumbsdown for this game. The magic is quite fun and works great with the controls. All of the spells have more than one function and feel intuitive with the Index controllers. Very satisfying to use. And unlike some games like this, I felt I could use pretty much all of them effectively together and didn't just get locked into one spell. Though there is one that is completely OP and sorta gets used a lot towards the end.
I will repost the downgrade instructions again, in case someone doesn't see the review I saw. The solution below was posted by DexgamingX:
1. Win + R to open Run
2. Copy and paste this in the Run window and hit enter: steam://open/console
3. The previous command adds the Console menu to the top of Steam, all the way to the right of Store, Library, etc.
4. Copy and paste this into the Console and hit enter: download_depot 1103860 1103861 8678823462881895640
5. Nothing will show up to indicate download progress, just give it some time.
6. When it's complete, it will tell you where the download is. It will be a folder called WindowsNoEditor.
7. In your Library, right click the game, Manage, Browse Local Files.
8. I did this about a month ago, so I'm not 100% sure, but I believe there is already a folder in there called WindowsNoEditor, which you delete and replace it with the downloaded WindowsNoEditor folder. There will be a few other folders in here that I did not touch.
9. In your Library, right click the game again, properties, updates, and select "Only update this game when I launch it."
This worked for me and was a much better experience. Thanks to DexgamingX for posting this solution. I wouldn't have played it otherwise, as it looked like hot garbage and the controls were terrible. Great game at it's core, but this is definitely bait and switch.
