Back when Telltale released The Walking Dead (Season 1), it was a massive and unexpected success. At the time, it genuinely popped off, with content creators all over every platform playing and talking about it. At the end of it all, everybody waited with baited breath for Season 2 of The Walking Dead. Instead we got The Wolf Among Us. If you were anything like me at the time, you thought "Ew, what is this? All I want is Season 2 of The Walking Dead," and you moved on, thinking nothing of it. I had never even heard of the "Fables" graphic novels the Wolf Among Us is based off of anyways. Having played The Wolf Among Us so many years later, I genuinely feel bad for being part of the problem back then. The Wolf Among Us released to little fanfare and excitement, but make no mistake, this is Telltale's absolute best work.
From start to finish, The Wolf Among Us has a clear vision and sets out to do it in force. Telltale is unchained and at the top of their game from the opening frame of the game. It's gritty, it's brutal, it's violent, and it's every bit as thrilling to experience. There's intrigue in every episode, and Telltale does an incredible job using old childhood fairytales and nursery rhymes and bringing them to life in such a new and unique story. Even for someone that wasn't familiar with "Fables" or childhood stories and such in general, every bit of the game and the story was a treat to watch unfold. There's even a little summary to help get you more acquainted with these fairytale characters you might not know of. To top it all off, Snow White, your typical "Will they won't they" romance character of the game, is fantastic compared to every other character Telltale has tried to do the same thing with. Romance options in Telltale games usually feel hamfisted or just kind of weak in general, Snow White is strong and independent, a woman you WANT to do well by compared to most Telltale romance options who just... kind of exist with a binary yes/no to start a romance with.
Bigby Wolf, the main character you step into the shoes of, is a morally gray, uncaring, rude little prick who only has one goal: Destroy everything that stands in his way of solving his case. He's a bit dense, but he is witty with an intimidating presence to him in nearly every scene. He IS the Big Bad Wolf, he is feared, rumors swirl around him, and his dark fairytale past still lingers in the minds of all people, allowing you to choose if you lean into his intimidating, ruthless side, or if you want to show some compassion and mercy.
Do yourself a favor, just get the game. If you love old fairytales with a new spin, if you love Telltale games, if you just love a great story... This has everything you want in spades. It's just a shame it's kind of short, but the brief nature of the story means it's concise and to the point, nothing is wasted, and every scene matters.
