I'm relatively new to this game. I have less than 30 hours in this game. But I bought it and many of the DLCs packs during the Summer Steam sale.
This particular map has some gorgeous scenery. It's Bob Ross country. There are some visual glitches with the snow fall that happens now and then. Under bridges and around houses has a perfect square of terrain that's not covered in snow, as though snow only ever falls straight down, with zero wind. This isn't game breaking or anything, but in a game that prides itself on immersion in the experience, these little things sure pull you out.
There were also audio glitches. When it starts snowing, it plays a rain sound effect. Ummm. What? Was this a placeholder asset that somebody forgot to swap out? The main game still hasn't fixed the audio glitch where animal calls to the right of you will sound like they're coming from the left. Apparently that's been a problem for several years and still hasn't been patched. This glitch almost is game-breaking, considering the whole point is tracking down animals in a hunt.
People in the Steam reviews were complaining that the quests of the Yukon Valley map are pretty bare bones. I can see why they're complaining. It was just a whole lot of walking from point A to point B, just to click E on a random object. In a game about hunting, the main story should involve... hunting. But I didn't mind it so much. There's plenty of hunting to do without having your hand held through it. And it was a beautiful walk in all kinds of different biomes, and a fairly interesting story.
But when I exited the game after finding the cellphone at the mine, I came back the next day to continue, and it went straight to the victory screen as soon as I logged in. I was like... wut? Then, after I finished the last couple of quests, the whole game locked up instead of playing the victor screen. I had to shut everything down and restart.
Many of the sidequests involve hunting. So there's that for the players that need to be directed in their killing. I'm also pretty damn sure a grizzly isn't going to run away like a scared rabbit every time you come near it. That was downright silly, if you know anything about bears. Wolves are too damn strong, meanwhile. I blasted a wolf right in the dome with a shotgun, three times, from about 2 meters away, and he just shook it off and kept coming. Wut? lol
Despite all the bugs and glitches, it was a fun experience overall. It really did feel like walking around in a vast forest in the far north. I would have been extremely annoyed, if I'd paid full price for this and found so many unpatched bugs after 2 years. But for only two bucks, it was plenty of entertainment. My recommendation is conditional on you buying it at a really steep discount. If it's not currently on sale, consider this review a thumbs down.
