I've never been suspended or banned and despite my steam listed hours, I have played this game for 10 years.
I remember growing up playing this game, back when it was completely free to play with unlimited games that aren't locked behind paywalls, I remember the only reason why I bought this game on steam was to get the bonus's and ingame currencies. I didn't need it to play the game or anything, purely a choice of my own free will.
I even in highschool got most of my friends into the game and we would play it regularly, I still remember the day Town of Salem went from F2P to charging you to play as when I invited a new friend to make a account to join us, I had to pay for it.
Now its so bad, the lobbies are toxic & racist, devs only took action when there was a wave of racist "moonmen", I lost my spark for the game long before this era though and only witnessed it while at a friends house.
So heres what you gotta know BEFORE U BUY:
- You have to pay to play, otherwise the game limits you to 5 games every 3 hours, considering some games can take anywhere from 5-30 minutes. Depends if you have trolls in ur lobby.
- Players; they can range anywhere from toxic, gamethrowers, trolls or staight up bots. This has been the games LIFELONG problem.
- Allowed Content Creators (popular Youtubers, who they sponsored to play their game) to repeatedly break the game rules without punishment, which encouraged a wave of cheaters.
- Moderation is trigger happy with their punishments that feel very cash grabby: My original friend group stopped playing the game years ago due to a friend of mine being banned unfairly for "threatening to harm another player" because they wanted the WW killed as a townie... They tried to appeal their ban but got an email that basically told them that they wont be unbanned but are free to "purchase a new account". Keep in mind that in most lobbies, even still to this day, you'll find people trolling and using racist terms and names throughout the games without punishment.
- In 2018 there was a massive IP data breach, this caused me and millions of other accounts to be exposed. I had to abandon my linked email as I got thousands of scam emails a month due to this.
- They created a sequel game called Town of Salem 2, this split a already dwindling playerbase between two games, this game is barely updated.
- Despite Moderation being trigger happy with the bans, they do not punish the problem players like leavers and game throwers, these are repeat offenders. I remember seeing the same leaver for months and we always reported them but they kept playing and ruining games without punishment.
- I knew a jury member (I think this is a type of moderation but on a more casual scale im not sure?) attempt to fix the racism & homophobia, they got banned...
- Their second game removed moderators who were improving the game for a new publisher they sold to.
Your better off playing among us or some other deception game, while gameplay wise Town of Salem SHOULD BE THE BEST CHOICE, due to the issues the game has, its not worth the toxicity and greed.
