Back in the day, I enjoyed playing that kind of simple, runner games. I remember there were quite a lot of Flash runner games. Most of them, despite being so similar to each other, due to their type, tried to offer a variety of themes and fresh, diverse gameplay mechanics. Recently, I've been thinking about trying out a game like this, just created in modern times. Turbo Pug DX caught my attention with its funny concept and cute, pixel graphics. Too bad I was utterly disappointed after turning it on and playing for a couple of minutes...
Unlike many runner games from the Flash era, I couldn't find Turbo Pug DX as a game that'd be fun to play. Not at all. It has awful, janky, and unresponsive controls. And if it wasn't bad enough, there is a highly questionable hitbox system. It makes playing the whole game absolutely annoying and relies more on luck than the actual player's skill. Speaking about luck, the weird RNG system featured in this game, on which in-game prizes (such as skins) are based, didn't motivate me to play more either.
All of this makes this game's difficulty unreasonably high. It's not hard in a fair, challenging way. It's hard because its simple mechanics are so badly done that you can neither call it a relaxing runner game nor a skill-based runner game. It results in feeling frustrated more than entertained, way too many times, or feeling sort of punished because of the aforementioned technical shortcomings. One could say that perhaps it's intentional. Can be, but it wouldn't change the fact that the mechanics in Turbo Pug DX are completely disappointing and clunky at best.
On top of that, this game lacks the basic functionalities you'd expect to see in a modern-day runner game, no matter how simple it was. And I'm not talking here about strictly running-centered elements, which are, as I mentioned earlier, underwhelming. Features such as locking FPS in any way (preferably via Vsync). Come on, it's not cool to see a game going so heavy on your CPU and running in several hundred frames per second without any internal (in-game) limiter.
At least its price is low, but so what? I was disappointed to the point where I couldn't recommend it, even if I got it for free.
