While in elementary school I remember installing Uplink on my friends computer and telling him it was some "new work program" I found on my Dad's desk. "Uplink?" my friend asked, "Uplink to what?" I started it up and pretended to freak out as Uplink goes through it's surprisingly awesome boot sequence. I will never forget the look of horror wash over my friends face as he assumed he is now enrolled in a top-secret hacking agency and this must be his life now.
For the time this game was unbelievable, and although it's hard for me to judge completely unbiased, with such a powerful sense of nostalgia, I would say it still holds up today. Like many of the other reviews say it is a bit grindy, and the map is the most glaringly dated component. The soundtrack though absolutely slaps, I still listen to it sometimes. I ended up going into IT and I sometimes wonder if this is the first spark to a deeper passion of understand how technology works under the hood.
10/10 in my heart, but 7.5/10 for a new player in 2024.
