It's Absolutely Fantastic
TLDR:
If you're a fan of VS, or Castlevania, THIS is a must have; whether it be the characters, the music, or the intrigue - just get it!
Short Details
Good:
- The music, new mixes of Castlevania favourites
- Loads of characters; featuring ones from NES era all the way to the DS era (how awesome)
- The weapons; Belnades' spells OP
- New map; it's crazy big, and has lots of progression/new features
Bad:
- some weapons are a bit lackluster
- sections of the map you can get trapped in
- progression on select characters is a bit tricky
- the music can get a bit repetitive, but that's a small criticism
- more weapons = more RNG, do you feel lucky?
Short Review
As a lifelong fan of Castlevania we have been utterly spoilt with this little crossover, for the asking price this is an absolute steal. I've binged a lot of Castlevania related content in the last 20 years: the NES games, SotN -(400m times), DoS, The Netflix shows; god I love anything Castlevania-ey - so much so that I had to move over to the Bloodstained games to get my fix.
Moving on, I love seeing things from my childhood getting the recognition they deserve, seeing Soma & Yoko in the game makes me really happy; Dawn of Sorrow was my first introduction to the franchise, (may hardcore fans strike me down on the spot, I know). But when I played as them for the first time, hearing the tracks that accompanied them, namely: 'Pitch Black Intrusion', & 'Dracula's Tears' , respectively, I think I sh*t my pants in excitement.
It's fantastic; they've really nailed the audio presentation by seamlessly mixing old CV tracks with their own VS interpretations of them; so not only are you getting a great little addition to VS, but you're also paying for a new remixed album for both games!
The new map 'Ode to Castlevania' is a brilliant new addition, with many new mechanics such as teleporters & 2D boss rooms from Symphony of the Night , when I first saw them I did cream a bit, but only a small amount..
It's a great way to combine the 'long flat map' style from VS, and give it a bit more depth - this added to my replayability of the map
I've mentioned this earlier but the weapon sandbox is fantastic, namely the spells, but there is a strange whip-bloat and some of which are just a little bit dogsh*t if I'm completely honest; spawning with them as a primary and not being able to get rid of them is a pain - I'm looking at you Juste grrrrr, you're so powerful, but you have a crappy starting weapon, it's a good job I love you XD - But I love Alucard more, I'm gay...
As always, if you've made it this far, thank you ever so much for stopping by, have a lovely morning/day/evening <3
