This is a short indie puzzler game that has a fantastic central conceit. In summary, Viewfinder will provide you with an enjoyable, unique experience that you haven't seen in other games. However, it is very short and most people will complete it in 6-8 hours. Therefore, while I disagree with other commentators about it being nothing more than a "glorified tech demo", which is incredibly unfair, the game may not warrant its full price.
The Good
The core mechanic of the game, taking photos through various means and aligning them in the world to change things in order to solve the problems, is fantastic. It works as expected every time and must have been really difficult to develop in order to meet all situations. Great work by the developers.
The mechanics are switched throughout the game, which gives each chapter / level a fresh feel. I think negative reviews that says it uses its best ideas in the first hour aren't really accurate. Some of the puzzles in the third chapter were the hardest, in my opinion.
By and large the puzzles are on the easy side. Only a couple of them really made me scratch my head. You do feel clever when you solve each one though, which is the crucial element for any good puzzle game. I'm not sure why people are complaining about the timer on the last level. If you've applied everything you've learned over the course of the game then it should only take 5-6 attempts max. It's certainly easier if you've finished the optional levels as it uses a lot of the tricks from those.
The art style is great. The game will age well. It's bold and colourful and sometimes it's worth pausing for a few seconds to soak in the view.
I really like the music. It fits the overall soothing, relaxing tone of the game.
The mix of the graphics and music makes for a really chill ambience. Even wen you're struggling with a couple of the harder puzzles, it's never stressful and it always a has a relaxed, enjoyable feel.
I did not encounter any bugs. The graphics won't be particularly taxing for most machines but there are adequate settings to suit your needs. Keys can be rebinded (rebound?) without any issues.
The game has a cat in it.
The Bad
The story is very slight and doesn't add anything. It's about trying to find a solution for climate change. Personally, I'm all for trying to do something about climate change but it can't be denied that it's a contentious issue and there seems little point in potentially alienating a decent portion of your audience when you don't really have a strong or incisive point to make. I think the game is ultimately trying to say that big problems don't have simple answers but the story didn't do it for me even though I did try to listen to most (if not all) of the recordings that are scattered throughout the levels.
I found the scripts annoying. All the scientists have a very smug, self-congratulatory tone, everyone is a genius despite none of their points being particularly deep. The main character in particular was grating. Her tone, volume and words ("This is SICK!!!") did not fit the otherwise relaxed ambience of the game.
