Read more...This reserve is a delightful experience. There are mallard, hare, red fox, gray wolves, goats, sitka, caribou, wapiti, moose, black bear, and bison, i.e. whatever size/tier you like (within the limits of the game). Alaska is always a treat for me, for some reason and I'm happy I got the "Elite Edition" (the game bundled with Map Pack 1) for this one (I enjoy it more than the first North American and Romanian reserves). Also, you get to roleplay as a female huntress*, which is always appreciated (I don't like how I smell after two days in the mountains IRL and I'm betting being a male has something to do with it).
*While she makes a good point on firearm safety (applicable IRL), she's not written as a particularly smart character — no sane person who wants to keep a relatively low profile (as an attempt to distance oneself from past events) would change his/her name to "Mackovich".
Thumbs up and recommended because the hunting that is available on this dlc map. Thumbs down for how lackluster and non hunting related this dlc story line is to a degree. No, I'm not pissed off about the "protagonist" is a female. Matter of fact, I think it was a pretty cool idea to introduce a female character in the game that is more hands on outside of some side characters.
I don't get why people are bitching and moaning about a female character as our "protagonist", women hunt too. My wife is a hunter and enjoyed the fuck out of the dlc, except the story missions. Gun safety that pushed consistently in the story was a bit much IMO, but given that the story was centered around a hunting accident, I understand why the story would push gun safety and hunting etiquette the way that it did was was less focused on hunting. There are plenty of side missions available that are more focused on hunting objectives.
As for the map, absolutely stunning scenery and wide open terrain to navigate, and even thick wooded areas that can make your hunt more of a challenge. This map was a knock out of the park home run when it comes to the amount of animals in a given area, and the openness and closeness of trees. It makes it easier to hunt the lower tiered animals to complete the character milestones or ability unlocks, but the hard to get to areas that are chock full of trees is where the big animals like to hide, and that makes it more of a challenge which I love.
