Abandon Ship Review (Fooj)
I played the game for a good amount of time, roughly 36 hours as of writing. (Please note that I've only played the main campaign) I also played the game over a course of weeks here and there.
I enjoyed the game aesthetically as it reminded me of some older PlayStation 1 games and that's why i initially got into it. And i am sure many people did the same.
Overall the game was fun, I am not a big fan of rogue-likes but this game drew me in because of the gameplay and exploration of the map. Sadly though the game became a bit repetitive once you reached a certain level of understanding of enemy's behaviour, aspects of the map and weather events.
In terms of the story i liked it, but there were aspects that didn't make sense to me and it didn't feel there was a sense of urgency to defeat the big bad towards the end. As others have mentioned there was no real epilogue and it made me wonder what was going to happen to the world, as the buildup for the end game was rather important and a lot happens towards the end, but nothing was ever really explained. Certain side stories were fantastic and i was more intrigued by the spiders or the necromancer than the main story.
Certain aspects of the gameplay meant nothing too, such as crew skills. Which i felt like the crew aspect should've been developed more considering every crew member has a little bio about themselves but it ultimately did nothing. I also WISH there was a button for the crew to immediately put out fires or fix breaks in the hull and it would allow them to go back to their post automatically. I spent more time clicking individual things over and over instead of focusing on the battle because of this.
Overall i enjoyed it, otherwise i wouldn't have beaten it. I am not a fan of rogulikes. So please take my review with a grain of salt. I hope that the developers can understand my frustrations and know they have a decent game here, its just not fully polished.
If you do enjoy the age of sail and this type of gameplay and aesthetic, its a pretty nice game to play here and there.
Thanks
