Battlefield 2042 Review (Jakob)
Dropping the reality/truth bomb about Battlefield 2042.
A few days ago I saw a PC Gamer article titled “Battlefield 2042 is really good now”. And I was utterly shocked by the replies and comments under this post. Hundreds of people were agreeing with this.
And I will have to die in this hill, ladies and gentlemen, I will not allow this to happen, as long as I am alive. Because if you accept Battlefield 2042, even in its current state, as a good game, you are lowering the bar. Period.
Even I can acknowledge that DICE has done a pretty surprising job at pulling Battlefield 2042 back, from the position that it started in. But, when you take a step back and really look at the position it started in, all DICE has been really doing with these updates for the past 15-17 months is getting it to an acceptable release-state.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are playing Battlefield 2042, right now, in the state, that it should’ve released in. And yes, if Battlefield 2042 released in this current state, it probably WOULD be a good game. But that’s not what happened. Battlefield 2042 released, and was by far, the WORST video game, I have ever played in my entire life. 99% of the playerbase left the game, and the vast majority of those people are STILL not going to play the game. So the craziest thing to me is, that people are now celebrating the fact that DICE essentially played catch-up for over a year, with a product that was so bad it should’ve been illegal to sell for money.
The REALITY of Battlefield 2042 is:
We STILL don’t have anywhere near the amount of content we SHOULD have. Okay? This is still not an acceptable game.
You still can’t even, TO THIS DAY, see what SQUAD you’re in, in the SQUAD-menu. Over a year after release, in a BATTLEFIELD game.
The game JUST got a class system, like literal a few months ago. That’s a fundamental tenant of the Battlefield franchise, and it was RECENTLY added to the game.
The game is not even CLOSE to ANY of the other Battlefield games when it comes to content, or quality.
There are STILL random invincibility bugs in Battlefield 2042.
There are STILL problems with hit-reg and netcode.
There are STILL problems with the performance.
There are STILL problems with the base-game maps, even the REWORKED ones. Because the base-game maps were so utterly terrible, that even a full rework wasn’t enough to save some these maps. So even with the GOOD maps that have been added to the game, the reality is that the majority of the maps are still pretty bad.
The game balancing or rather, lack of balancing is outright idiotic.
There are NO engagement distances in battlefield anymore. If you can SEE them, you can hit them and KILL them. From really almost ANY distance. This is a MASSIVE problem. You never know what’s safe anymore. You can die from any distance, angle, caliber, at anytime, if the person hits his shots.
I could probably write an essay about the vehicle design in this game.
There are NO mechanics to learn. Not at all like previous titles. I’m not talking about mil-sim stuff but radar, weight, altitude, basic stuff like in BF4.
TRANSPORT vehicles are the highest DPS in the game.
DICE STILL haven’t figured it out. I could go on and on about the things that are wrong with Battlefield 2042 but even now, the POINT is, that after ALL of these updates, the game STILL has UNFIXABLE fundamental issues, that are catastrophic for gameplay. It’s extremely unbalanced, the performance is bad, the content is EXTREMELY lacking, and in general, the game is mid af.
To end this review I would like to say that I am in no way saying that you can’t have fun in Battlefield 2042. I’m saying you can have fun and STILL acknowledge the fundamental flaws of this game.
