BioShock Review (Austin96)

Underwater City With A Dark Past

The game is set in 1960, and follows Jack, who discovers the underwater city of Rapture, built by business magnate Andrew Ryan to be an isolated utopia. The discovery of ADAM, a genetic material which grants superhuman powers, initiated the city's turbulent decline. Jack attempts to escape, fighting ADAM-obsessed enemies and Big Daddies, while engaging with the few sane humans that remain and learning of Rapture's past. The player, as Jack, can defeat foes in several ways by using weapons, utilizing plasmids that give unique powers, and by turning Rapture's defenses against them.

💾Graphics
Bioshock has some pretty good graphics. The atmosphere is unique and also really dark/spooky at times, taking place in an underwater city. I really enjoyed this setting because it felt so different from many other games during this time, and the overall level design is actually great! Many sections give a feeling of dread, and a sense of mystery. Also the aesthetic is really awesome! Using the 1960’s was such a great decision from the developers (fits the game perfectly). The UI though is a mixed bag for me. I like the font and overall UI style, but the user map is confusing at times and doesn't look as good in my opinion.

🎮Gameplay
Bioshock has some really good gameplay here. Many of the mechanics are really well designed and fun! For example you have the Plasmid abilities. These abilities give you special powers that can be really useful in taking out your foes. Some are more for damage, like for example shocking enemies, burning them, even freezing them in place, and much more. For other abilities you can use for more of a supporting role. For example you can create a clone of yourself and distract the enemy, or even make a Big Daddy be your ally for a short time. The abilities are the highlight of the game and it really shows. Throughout your journey, you will find many vending machines which will allow you to buy health, ammo, and even EVE to charge up your abilities. You can also craft items, and even create your own playstyle with the Perks you can find, and even purchase. The enemy variety is okay here. You mainly fight just some bad guys, and some Big Daddies, but nothing super unique here. Now some enemies do have their own abilities, but overall they feel the same for the most part (in terms of how you deal with them). Exploration also feels really rewarding. Using your abilities to open some locations to get good loot just feels so fun and worthwhile. The hacking mini game is also fantastic. It makes you really use your brain (well on the harder hacking difficulties), this makes it fun, engaging, and rewarding as well. My biggest gripe has to be the gunplay. I’m not a fan of the gunplay here. It’s overall just too stiff and doesn’t really feel that much fun. I’d even say that it kinda holds this game back at times. Some shots don’t really register and just aren't that impactful. Besides that the gameplay is really good and holds up pretty well (besides the gunplay of course).

📜Story
The story is actually pretty well done. You discover many mysteries surrounding Rapture and feels overall really interesting. You will experience many twists and unexpected moments throughout the story as well. I will say that some parts are kinda confusing. Luckily you have TONS of audio recorders you can find through the game. This gives the game a rich amount of lore for anyone into these kinds of Science Fiction games. The ending of the game (well the boss fight) was really disappointing and felt rushed. It was super easy, and the dialogue of the villain was really lame. The villain will also just repeat the same lines over, and over again. This already took a lame and cheesy boss fight from being bad, to annoying.

🕛Playtime
The main story is around 12-15 hours. It’s a good length and even has a good amount of replayability (since you can make different builds). There is also a new game plus which allows you to keep all the weapons, plasmids, and upgrades you got in the first run.

🎧Sound
Sound design was okay. The overall voice acting was really good, and fitted the 1960 setting perfectly. The weapons sound pretty average at best. The worst part is the audio bugs I kept getting in my playthrough which makes audio either quiet, or stutters for a short bit.

❗Bugs❗
This game does have a good amount of bugs. Being able to see enemy shadows from across walls, texture clippings, and even audio bugs. The audio bugs are the worst. Everytime you listen to an audio recorder (or even story dialogue), the audio either wants to stutter, or be silent completely. This will happen a lot and can even get you killed since you can’t hear enemies for a short while. Also don’t play this game at 1 mouse sensitivity in the settings. The mouse movement gets super choppy and unplayable.

🔅Performance
Performance was excellent. I had zero crashes or frame rate issues. I can’t find one issue in terms of performance so you should be good here.

✔️Pro’s

Beautiful artstyle
Dark atmosphere
Pretty good story
Solid graphics for 2007
Awesome 1960’s aesthetic
Can create character builds

Amazing game setting (underwater city)

Plasmid abilities are really fun and creates creative ways to defeat your foes

❌Con’s

Bossfight/Ending was pretty lame
Some bugs can be pretty frequent
Gunplay feels pretty stiff and not fun
Lowest mouse sensitivity setting is broken
Listening to audio logs can cause audio bugs
Switching locations lowers sensitivity for a short while (possible bug)

🔗Conclusion
Bioshock is really fun and a great Science Fiction game. Exploring an underwater city and discovering the dark mysteries that surround it was an absolute blast. The game has its own flaws that can be frustrating, but if you are able to look past those then you are gonna have a great time here. Get this game if you in need of something mysterious and unique, it’s worth your time.
