Calico Review (faeriexdecay)

I'm generally too lazy to write reviews for games on Steam, even for games I really REALLY like, yet some of the criticisms this game has received has me ready to fight for it tooth and claw. I will admit first and foremost that the game has flaws. It is by no means perfect, and it could certainly use more content to help fill in the world and make it feel more alive. HOWEVER, what IS here is an absolute delight. This little gem occupied nearly 9 hours of time to acquire all achievements, do all quests, and cook every item currently in it. And I would do it again.
Yes, the game is a little janky - and I am one who HATES when games control poorly - but never at any point did the jankiness of this game ruin it for me or make me not want to play. In fact, I found the jankiness to be incredibly charming. And the physics are hilarious! I encountered no actual bugs or anything that broke the game. It played very well even with the mild jankiness I saw, most of which was visual. This game is recommended to be played with a controller, yet my stubbornness and hatred of controllers had me playing with mouse and keyboard. As of the current version, I had no trouble at all doing so. I could tell certain parts would probably have been easier with a controller, but at no point did I truly struggle or want to stop playing because of its controls. I also had no issues at all with the cooking minigames. I've seen some complaints about that. You literally just have to look around, and the game points you to right where you need to go. There are little cat paws pointing to every ingredient you need, and navigating is made super easy with little jumpy spoons and a tiny elevator. Take a second to explore, and you'll find everything you need with ease.
It's a quirky game with lots of personality that made me fall for it instantly. Magical girls? The ability to interact with every single animal? Numerous fun cooking minigames? The ability to decorate your own cat cafe? Lots of cuties to meet and befriend? Several different areas to explore? Yes, yes, yes! There could be more - absolutely there could be more - and criticisms that the world feels a little empty are valid. You won't find hidden things in every nook and cranny. That's fine, though, because what is here is genuinely enjoyable. I loved every moment of this game. I don't know if I can sing its praises enough. I genuinely wish there was more. I WILL play this again. The character customization is also INCREDIBLE. I can't thank the creators enough for allowing players to make actually fat characters. This representation is lovely.
It's janky, it's silly, it's not terribly long, but it is wonderful. Get this game if you like games with lots of charm and cozy vibes. Seriously.
