Circuit Superstars Review (PizzaSubCombo)
The honest truth is that you won't get a lot of mileage out of Circuit Superstars, outside of a few evening play sessions with friends. The content roster is not conducive to extended play, and it's possible to exhaust the selection of cars and tracks within your first hour inside the app.
This is because Circuit Superstars is a throwback to games like the PC freeware title "GeneRally", or RC Pro-Am on the SNES, with an isometric camera view and simplistic physics. It is the race car equivalent to Mario Party; a title you dust off in a group for lighthearted fun, without needing to worry about calibrating your steering wheel, memorizing a track, or dialing in your car setup. Basically, if you're part of a sim racing discord group, you'll end up buying this for game night with the boys.
What exists, is absolutely fantastic, and you'll have a ton of fun during the first hour. Cars are nimble yet convey a solid sense of weight to them, online racing is practically flawless regarding netcode, and the overall format of races results in a game that takes just seconds to learn. No fancy brake bias, pit speed limit to adhere to, or pit strategy menus to fiddle with - just monitor the HUD to see your fuel/tire level, drive in the pits and stop in the box to service your car when it's obvious you need to. The mechanics are brilliant. It's the ultimate party racing game.
The problem is, Original Fire Games unfortunately never provided the other half of the mix that made GeneRally so addictive. GeneRally became an internet phenomenon among sim racers, because of the incredible modding community that spawned from GR releasing first party toolkits - a scene which exists to this day. After a user grew tired of the initial batch of content, there was an entire world to explore of additional cars and tracks; from the hyper-realistic, to the absurd. Circuit Superstars features no such modding scene; and is like asking someone to pay $20 for a vanilla GeneRally that you can't mod.
Circuit Superstars is brilliant for those first few hours, but a giant missed opportunity.
