Company of Heroes 2 Review (H282_Number617)
This game is one of the games of all time. Personally, I really enjoy the game. The nearly 500 hours I have at the time of this review should make that clear. The game may not be extremely realistic with infantry being able to survive 5 shots without dying, or Panzer IVs being able to withstand a 7.6cm F-34 cannon from a T-34 with the front armour, but it does place you in the commander's seat fairly well. You need to either pick a doctrine early to catch your enemy off-guard, or wait for them to pick their doctrine allowing you to counter effectively. You need to manage resources of manpower, munitions and fuel to make sure you can replace losses and build up offensive breakthrough forces or defensive fortified forces. You need to know what your army is capable of and what your enemy can use from their army to counter; such as the Soviets being more infantry focused, while the British are more about "capture and hold" strategy. The Americans are versatile and the OKW are likewise. The Wehrmacht are arguably also versatile, but in my experience, they are more tank orientated. Doctrines are used to give you an edge in specific fields such as ambush tactics, elite infantry, heavy tanks and artillery. The doctrine you pick can either hyper-focus on what your army is already capable of (e.g. Soviets with elite Guards infantry), or it can be used to fill gaps in where your army lacks (e.g. Soviets with IS-2s and T-34/85s). The community has also made some great mods with my personally picks being the Wikinger mod and the Spearhead mod. These mods aim to make the game more immersive and realistic.
Overall, I like this somewhat old RTS. The CoH series is one of my favourite series ever, and this game may just be my favourite of the three current CoH games. Even with all of this said, do keep this in mind:
Experiences in game may and will vary. Form your own opinion by experiencing the gameplay yourself. If you don't like the RTS genre, this game is clearly not for you.
