Crysis polarizes
When Crysis 2 saw the light of day around 10 years ago, the game had a difficult time with some fans.
Crysis was a technical masterpiece in its time, but it ate the most modern hardware for breakfast and, according to Crytek, was pirated to an absurd extent.
To solve the problem of pirated software, Crytek turned its focus to consoles with Crysis 2. Apart from the technical challenges, Crytek also broke new ground in terms of content in order to appeal to an even broader audience. The sprawling jungle levels of the previous game have been replaced by the graphically chic New York city backdrop.
As a result, the flow of the game became more linear, many things were less destructible and the tactical aspect of the predecessor largely fell by the wayside. Also the story tied only vaguely to the first Crysis.
But what is it actually about in Crysis 2

As mentioned at the beginning, the setting is New York City, where things go haywire. People are getting sick, Marines are called to help and the big corporation C.E.L.L. (Crynet Enforcement & Local Logistics) is trying to contain the disease by all means.
The story thus begins a few years after the events of the predecessor. In Crysis we also found out that the North Korean army encountered alien technology in the Pacific and upon contact with it the aliens known as Ceph were released. And it is precisely these Ceph that invade New York in the form of alien spores and infect large parts of the population.
The US military sends soldiers to get the situation under control.
We play Alcatraz, part of the marine squad that is brought to New York in a submarine and is immediately greeted and attacked by angry aliens.
The team around Alcatraz dies and he himself is seriously injured.
Fortunately, the nanosuit soldier Prophet, whom we already know from the first part, shows up and saves us.
When we wake up the world is different. Not only that New York has meanwhile become the target of the large-scale Ceph attack, Alcatraz suddenly wears the Nanosuit...

When Alcatraz enters devastated New York for the first time in the Nanosuite, he is immediately greeted by C.E.L.L. agents attacked.
Their client, the biotech company Crynet, developed the nanosuit and of course now wants the thing back.
Because Prophet didn't appear to be particularly cooperative in this regard, the mercenaries have orders to finish him off.
And now everyone thinks Alcatraz is Prophet...
At least Prophet told us that we urgently need to contact the scientist Dr. Gould should go because he could help us. And so we sneak, shoot and brawl our way through New York in search of Gould.
The storyline of Crysis 2 follows the points set in the introduction throughout the game. The single-player campaign, which lasts around eight to ten hours, sends us on a linear path through the devastated New York and confronts us with a wide variety of factions.
However, the plot remains relatively meager.
The story is staged decently, but the characters all seem like decals from any action movie you've ever seen in one way or another.
But you can forgive the game's narrative weaknesses because it's not primarily about the plot but about the action. And this is exactly where the second part moves at a very high level.
Basically, Crysis 2 Remastered is and remains a first-person shooter, in which we move linearly through defined areas and try to eliminate the opponents, who are always in the majority.
And this is where the second part of the series differs significantly from the first.
In Crysis, the game world was relatively open, so you could find your own solutions and actively avoid enemies.
The levels open in selected sections and allow enemies to dodge something. The great freedom of the first part, however, gives way overall to a guided experience.
But that can be overcome comparatively well, because Alcatraz controls precisely and can fall back on a limited but well-balanced arsenal of weapons. So you can choose between pistols, automatic firearms, shotguns and sniper rifles, which you can take from opponents or find in the game world.
The actual playful highlight in Crysis 2 is the Nanosuit.
The powerful suit has a number of abilities that will give you an advantage over your opponents. As long as the suit has energy that automatically recharges over time after it is used up, you can, for example, disguise yourself in order to stab enemies in the back.
If you prefer a direct confrontation, you can also strengthen the armor for a limited time and thus better withstand enemy fire.
In addition to these two main abilities that you use regularly, there are also smaller tricks that help you in special situations.
For example, thermal vision can be used to locate opponents even if you have to walk through fog.
Taken together with the occasionally built-in, albeit very short, vehicle passages, Crysis 2 Remastered shooter friends offers a good and balanced gaming experience.
The only downside is the artificial intelligence of your opponents. The AI makes little effort to take cover effectively. Instead, opponents often run relatively purposefully into your line of fire. In addition, the opponents often have impaired perception and routinely follow their route even if a dead comrade is a few meters away from them.
Despite the rather modest AI, Crysis 2 Remastered is relatively challenging at times, which is simply due to the mass of enemies you face.
In this respect, a targeted exercise of the Nanosuit skills is central to success, because Alcatraz doesn't hold up too much on its own.
If you take tissue samples from the enemy aliens, which is the case relatively regularly from the second half of the game, you can improve the nanosuit individually.
For example, you can unlock a jump attack or minimize the volume of the steps to be able to sneak up better.
The updates are not really substantial, but they leave a certain amount of room to influence one's own playing style. In addition, you can influence the values of the weapons with various weapon modifications such as silencers.
And what about the "can is run Crysis"?
Well, that's probably a question everyone should ask themselves first, but it's certainly less of a problem these days.
Crysis 2 Remastered is of course not a remake and accordingly you can already see on one or the other corner that the game is a few years old. Nevertheless, it is damn pretty to look at and for nVidia owners there are several ray tracing quality levels which, among other things, ensure realistic reflections such as reflections in puddles or in the paintwork of vehicles.
From the second highest ray tracing setting, the Nanosuit can see in window panes or in certain metallic surfaces. Although these effects are noticeably at the expense of performance, you can tease out significantly more frames with activated DLSS and thus play smoothly even with fully cranked graphics settings.
