Custom Mech Wars Review (Meatshield)
A lot of people are ragging on this game for technical reasons, and some of them are right. The deadzone on the mouse is crazy bad.
However, the game runs smoothly, and it's FUN! Not in a challenging way per-se even at high difficulty. Combat is pretty basic to start with. Point and shoot, launch some missiles, kill all enemies. Typical if you've played EDF games. The damage system is cool, and like most mech games you can lose arms, etc to damage. What I truly didn't expect is that if you get destroyed you can just hop out and run around until you get a new mech delivered to you. I like that WAY better than how EDF does it where you spend the rest of the mission stuck on the ground hoping someone comes and picks you up.
The customization is truly where the game shines. It doesn't care about physics or clipping. Want to have a massive shield on your chest that blocks your face but has a giant cannon coming out? Go right ahead! Want a weapon to float off to the side, disconnected from the body? DO IT! Complete mech customization is here, as long as the weight of everything isn't too heavy for the legs.
Naturally this makes for truly cursed builds if you want, or you can be more reasonable. One thing I've already found is there really isn't a limit to the number of weapons you equip. If you want 40 guns all firing when you pull the trigger, you can do that. It does however make the game pretty easy when you do that.
Overall, on a day one game, It's pretty solid. The multiplayer lobby has been having issues, but that's typical day-one launch stuff. I got into one game and had a blast. Single player is just the same missions just like EDF.
