Dead by Daylight: Chucky Chapter Review (Madness)

This DLC is fantastic. Sure, only Chucky himself is included, no survivors are provided, but what a fun and unique character he is. The developers worked with the actor that originally brought Charles Lee Ray’s doll body to life, and he provided over 12 minutes of voicelines, making Chucky the character with the most vocal interactions of all DBD killers. He talks constantly, insulting survivors while hitting them, wondering where they are if you fail to locate them, and reacting to hooks, kills, pallet stuns, and even match results.
But that is not the only fun aspect of this DLC. As you may have noticed already, Chucky is much, much smaller than the likes of Sadako or Hag, or even than a survivor. As such, the director once said Chucky in DBD would never work. Guess what, plans have changed ! And a character the size of Chucky had to be tackled in a unique way. Chucky is the only killer in the game that plays using third person camera, only switching to first person when carrying a survivor. These transitions are super smooth and feel amazing, hooking a survivor and seeing the camera switch back to third person gameplay is super satisfying.
But what about the power itself ? Well, it’s super fun to play around with. On paper, Chucky is super simple : you can press a button to hide your terror radius for a brief duration. In this state, you can use another button to charge at survivor at a much greater speed, hitting them at the end of the dash. Hits can feel a little inconsistent when you’re still learning the character, but once that’s done, you have a character that is fun and super simple to use. I always liked when iconic licensed killers get a simple moveset that feel “vanilla”, something that killers like Myers, Demogorgon and Bubba also did very well. Not every killer needs to have a ton of unique mechanics like Vecna or Pinhead, especially if that killer is unique in the very way you play with them, which Chucky does to great effect.
If I were to have any critics with Chucky as a character, I would say two things : the first one is that due to the third person perspective, depth perception can sometimes feel a little off for both standard M1 hits and charged dash attacks. Charles’s body being in the way, between us and the survivor, it sometimes cause the player to miss hits while in the heat of the moment. It’s not a big issue, but it adds a little bit of precision to standard hits that the other killers don’t have to think about. But you could say this is countered by Chucky’s ability to see survivors while they try to 360 him (for beginners reading this : sometimes survivors will do advanced movements to mess with a killer trying to hit them, and Chucky can see that more clearly, allowing him to have an easier time reacting to it).

The other aspect of Charles Lee Ray that you may not like is that he DOES feel like a “straight to the point” type of character. I said this is precisely what I like about him, but all opinions regarding overall game feel are subjective, so if you’re the kind of guy/gal that enjoys deep characters with rewarding gameplay that are super hard to pick up even as a beginner, killers like Nurse, Blight or Hillbilly, you may not be into Chucky’s power.
But I would suggest trying him out regardless, as I’ve heard Chucky players that strive to be good do have some advanced techniques to learn (such as using a vault during his dash to extend its duration and pulling off insane hits from long distances).
But if you’re a beginner, willing to buy a first licensed killer, and you’re looking for a character that is easy to understand, but that you can still learn a few things with, all while happily slashing innocent people with, I HEAVILY recommend the Chucky DLC !
