Death or Treat Review (Metapharstic)
I'm honestly surprised to see so many negative reviews for Death or Treat. During my time with the game (about 2.5 hours right now), I've had an absolute blast. Are there problems? Sure, but they don't detract from the overall experience. I'll wholeheartedly agree that the combat system could use a few tweaks; hit/dash canceling and the ability to restart mid-air combos would be a step in the right direction. That said, you get used to these minor problems after a few runs and kind of fall into the game's rhythm.
The biggest problem is that the Death or Treat wears its influences too proudly on its sleeve, which seems to be rubbing some people the wrong way. Is it a Tim Burton-meets-Have a Nice Death knock-off? There are similarities, but there's clearly too much love and passion in this project to simply write it off as a simple cash grab. Speaking of cash, that price point's a little high in my opinion - this feels like a $14.99 or even $19.99 title. The price almost made me pass it up, but the art style eventually won me over.
Lastly, a suggestion to the developers: This is definitely an Action Roguelike game, so I'd try to get your game listed under that subgenre as well. You're missing out on players like me who may only browse that tag.
I play a TON of action roguelikes, and Death or Ttreat is a solid effort. Even though the story's a bit confusing, I dig the environments, the characters, and the combat. It's one I find myself thinking about when I'm doing other things, and given the amount of games I cycle through on a regular basis, that speaks volumes to me.
